Show P.C. School News January 25, 2008 The Summit County Bee Hockey Team Battle Against Brighton Page B1 Luge and Skeleton Racing at a Very Young Age CHERYL OVARD Bee Editor The Park City High School Hockey Team battled against Brighton both seeking the better positions for the playoffs that are coming up. The Miners skated well, holding their own until the Bengals got their speed up after the second period. The two teams traded leads until the final score of 4-3 at the end of the game, with the Brighton team - winning the fight to the end. It seemed as if the Miners could not shake the dominating team, and Coach Decker agreed that the Bengals were holding onto their possession outplaying the miners in the long run. Coaches agreed that the Miners have a lot of work to do. In the meantime, they took a little time off and helped the fundraiser for “Echoes of Hope” at the Park City Ice Arena on Sunday, Jan. 20. They worked outside in the cold afternoon air as they helped with parking and other details necessary to guide patrons to the right area to witness the “game of games” when the L.A. Kings joined with Celebrity Stars to give the audience a little entertainment with a fun “hockey game”! Good luck in the upcoming playoffs, Miners! The Park City Miners New Region 10 Swimming Champions Park City Miner’s coach, Mike Werner and his swimmers couldn’t be any prouder this week as the swim team came out with the edge on the lead over Judge at the Fairmont Aquatic Center. Because they are now the Region Champions - they still have another hurdle to get over for the 3A title. The Feb. 1 3A State Championship will be another grueling struggle and the Miners are ready to “takem”!. Good luck and congratulations to the Park City girls on their accomplishments! It’s tough to be a kid now-days especially in the competitive world! Competing in the luge and skeleton racing takes patience to learn and the athlete must be in top physical condition for a fast, hard start push. The weight of the sled is no more than 95 pounds for men and 77 pounds for women - but what about the kids! Samantha Carone, a third-grader at Trail Side Elementary School, started to learn this “new sport” for her, which she stated, “...I learned to do it and wanted to do ‘cause my big brother is doing it - and he has a lot of fun!” She was in a competition last week in which she placed third place (she said she really got fourth, because there was a problem with the scoring). She was also able to participate on the handing out of awards for the fifth Junior Luge World Cup at the Utah Olympic Park. “It was great fun - I wasn’t even cold because I have lots of layers of clothes on!” Big brother and ninth grader at Samantha and Anthony participate at Junior World Cup - in different ways! Treasure Mountain, Anthony Espinoza, has been on the team for luge for four years. He goes once in a while to Lake Placid in New York for more classes, and loves the sport. He has participated in the Youth Nationals — and describes luge as something that he truely enjoys. “…it’s a blast - I love it.” says Anthony with enthusiasm. He did not place at the Junior Luge World Cup races, but still had a great time. He and his sister are on the club team in Park City. Boy Scout Troop 71 Attends Commissioners Meeting The Park City Boy Scout Troop 71 of St. Mary’s Catholic Church observed and wrote about their trip to the Summit County Commissioners weekly meeting on January 23, 2008. They are working on their Citizenship Merit Badge. They talked briefly with the Commissioners; Sally Elliott, Ken Woolstenhulme and Bob Richer, following the meeting. The youth are from left to right: Ethan McIntire, Austin Herr, Parker Archer, Jordan Petersen, Graham Petersen, Leader Alan Petersen, and Adam Herr. They are ages 12-15, and attend PCHC, Treasure Mountain Middle School, Ecker Hill Middle School and Park City Academy. Not pictured, leader Ed McIntyre. They said that their favorite Scout “thing to do” is camping!
