It has grown by leaps and bounds, bringing people from all over the world interested in all walks of filmmaking…including a medley of first-time directors, actors, and all those “behind-the-scene” people who help make the films. It is a challenge to organize, direct, and make all the events of the Sundance Film Festival the great success it has been, and is thus far in its ten days (and “sleepless “nights). Robert Redford has had a great hand in bringing Park City and its neighboring cities that also host and run the movies for those who want to view the many hundreds of films which come to Utah in January each year. National coverage, local coverage, in the various media including tele- vision, newspapers, magazines and internet has grown to the point where it is evident, according to Robert Redford, that Sundance Film Festival has come to a point where there needs to be a second big step for next year’s event. The barriers used at Sundance would cover more than half a mile’s worth of ground, just to keep people in line while waiting for shows and keeping them from stepping onto the already crowded streets. The locals sometime just “leave for ten days” and rent out their homes to those Picabo Races For a Good Cause H35 L24 Mostly Cloudy attending, bringing in enough extra cash to help them out for a few months to follow! Businesses sometimes follow with the same idea, renting their space for meetings and other organizations to set up their offices. Traffic is a great problem, but with the help of the Park City Transit system, people are always getting to where they need to be – mostly on time! One movie which came to Sundance this year is entitled “In Bruges”. Director Martin McDonagh, a previous Olivier NHL L.A. Kings players as well as several well-known celebrities trickled into the Park City Ice Arena on Sunday, Jan. 20. They were packing, and sometimes pulling, in their bags filled with their hockey gear to play the First Annual Luc Robitaille’s Celebrity Shootout in partnership with Tom Bernard of Sony Pictures Classics, National Hockey League, and the L.A. Kings and presented by the D.I.S.C. Sports and Spine Center. This fun event was to benefit the inspirational organization of “Echoes of Hope”, which strives to give some feeling and spirit of hope in the lives of at-risk, foster, and emancipated foster youth by providing the resources, knowledge skills and support they need to reach their potential. Luc Robitaille and his wife Stacia, who reside in Heber City, founded the organization which is the sister charity of “Shelter for Serenity” which began after “Katrina” devastated the Louisiana area. Luc and Stacia have two foster children, Tiffany and Javon, in their home, and are helping them to find a way to a better education and way of life. The weather was perfect, the snow even better, and the enthusiasm of the crowd was high as Picabo Street started off her 4th Annual Ski Challenge Race by setting the time to beat on the course. She made two runs, one on the red course and one on the blue course. The racers who had signed up were in teams of 5 and sponsored by corporations. Their times were tallied as a team, each person running the course two times – one on the red and then the blue course. The race was led by the parade of flags carried by the Park City Ski Team, who covered the course waving the flags led by the United States of America flag. Winners were announced following the race, but the main purpose of the race was to raise money for the National Children’s Alliance. Korbell was their main sponsor for the fundraiser. Celebrities were amongst the racing participants. Nine-year old Elle Fanning had the opportunity to also take a private ski lesson from Picabo just prior to the race. Brady Miller was the first racer to match Picabo’s time down the hill. Nathan Rafferty, President of Ski Utah, was #71, and his team did well on the course. Olympic Skier Holly Flanders, also was a participant in the races with her team. Alex Schaffer, of the Park City Ski Team had a time of 23.28 – close to Picabo’s time of 23.11 on the blue run, but still behind her red run time of 22.69. CONTINUED ON PAGE A3 ed the hockey game. Kinsley Johnson, from the staff of the Park City Ice Arena, started off the program with a high-flying acrobatic act attached to the ceiling.
