The current remaining term uf this As I was driving to work early" on Wednesday marling. I was struck by the incredible beauty of the morning as the sun was beginning to rise on a new day. I also couldn't help but think of ihe many mornings I chose to stay in bed instead of enjoying this time of peacefulness and gentle calmness. Being a lover of nighttime, I never realized for a lung time, that by getting up early a person has a chance to welcome a new day hefiae the hectic behavior of Ihe daily grind sets in. A chance to give thanks fur being able to sit and contemplate, if unly briefly, in silence. Have to admit though, there are some pretty great sunsets scattered in for our enjoyment as welL I low to view the stare in ihe sky, especially on warm summer evenings, and just relax for a moment in time. Guess we really do have a lot to be thankful for when it cumes to mother nature", right? The big news this week, I suppose, is the fact we had another shouting- - this time at a National Zoo in Washington. I still maintain that if the media would discontinue ihe extensive coverage of these events, they might possibly be toned down a little, (that coming from a news person!!!!) However, with all the focus being placed on gun control (another issue), I troly wonder if troubled youth don't react to the newt and think Trey! maybe I could be on television loo, if I did something like that. The sad thing is that they don't stop to realize they are ending their future when they make such a decision. In choosing to oommit a crime, they hurt not only the victim, but family members and friends of both Ihe victim and the suspect Youth getting into trouble is a sad but unfortunately common occuncnce in our world today, so it always makes me happy to write articles showcasing the talents, accomplishment and abilities of our young people. It is grest to see their smiling faces in print As I have stated many times, we are really fortunate to have so many great youth in ourcommuni- - of the White House Gang, coupled with the advent of the current, chief, Clintoo-Er- a of strategist as New York (if elected), plus (and if) the election id Gore the Bore, could spell real trouble fur this nation by their keeping alive their continuity of deception for their own personal glory (aka legacy"). Next in the news is the heart wrenching story of Elian I have restrained myself from writing anything up until now, because (here is already so much coverage of the tragedy, and I haw mixed feelings about the situation. I personally cannot image how he must be feeling. Here we have a 6 year old boy who left the only life he had known, only to watch his mother drown at sea before they could begin a new life together. Why did she leave? What plans had she made for the future? Questions that can no longer be adtkesied. Then the little guy was brought out of the. water into a e that included toys, lots of attention, Disney new world, a puppy, his own room- - a taste of life many of us simply take for granted. News reporters and protesters outside his home, look away his right to a peaceful life here as well. On the other side, we have a father who wants his son returned home to him. What does he have to offer? A father's love and attention. A life filled with possibly little or no future- - but as someone said-- a life people from that culture life-on- expect The truly sad aspect to me is that he either should have been returned immediately, or a decision made to let him stay with his relatives in Miami. This has gone on loo long and has added greatly to the boys emotional state. What will become of him? If sent home, will he try to return to the State's when he is older? So many unanswered questions for such a darling little boy. Only the future holds the answers. QuoCe of the week We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken away from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." Viktor Frank! Have a super week. Think of other's and give them a smile. , To TNe EcIItor Sterling Scholar Competition Editor, What a wonderful opportunity I had of seeing only a handful of our finest students participate in the Sterling Scholar competition that was held in Heber on April 18. The students of North Summit represented our school with pride and dignity. They held their heads high and displayed the utmost of class. I would like to congratulate Valerie Snyder on her winning runner up in the Business and Marketing area. She was one winner of the thirteen participants representing North Summit Each and every one of these thirteen deserved to be recognized for the scholarship; however, they deserve to be applauded for the dignity and class which they showed throughout the evening. The only losers in the competition were the students from other schools, both on the stage and in the audience, who lacked the respect and class to demonstrate common courtesy that is expected in any event of this class. Compliments must be offered to the families of these kids who saw to it that they not only had academic training, but social training as well.
