Show Alta The Summit County Bee Page A2 Me About It Tell The Video War by learned) when his military advisors Witching told him "bombing Hell out of Milosevic for a few days wouldn't necessary find him begging for mercy. Nor did Clinton anticipate that his declaration of "No ground the TV newt reports about the Kosovo Wir, via the computer of the imaging cruise missile hits, for me, is like watching my grandkids play their video games displayed on the same TV screens. It's a technologically neutral distancing that seems unreal, like it's not really happening. But views of the targets' explosions, and the ensuing glare, dust, smoke, and fire soon bring into focus that it is real. It's happening to real people and it's real blood, real pain and suffering, and real devastation. You can't mega-ba- d help but wonder if technology is here to enhance and perpetuate human existence or if it's here to exterminate it. It looks to me like its much more costly to exterminate than to perpetuate. Those cruise missiles are a million bucks each, and we've shot hundreds of them into the Kosovo area, and maybe an equal amount at Iraq, to date. Then there's the cost of the $45 million airplane we lost (thanks be, we saved the pilot) and the daily, ongoing cost of keeping all our equipment functioning: aircraft, aircraft carriers, support and maintenance ships and equipment, other heavy equipment (plus the fuel needed), electronic and communications equipment, personnel and refugee supplies, food, shelter, personnel wages, salaries, countless incidental items, etc., ad infinitum. Add to this the cost of normal, bungled miscalculations of what you thought the enemy would do" - and didn't - and the cost expands. war-priori- ty Pundits and analysts seem to agree that our maybe didnt commander-in-chi- ef (as all, who were service inductees, listen-up,- Lon Sinister " troops in Kosovo, would accelerate Slobo's ethnic cleansing of the Albanians. Also, Bill (the same Bill who dodged the draft and protested against the Vietnam War doing it then while in Russia) blew past the thought that bombing Kosovo might bind the Kosavars more closely to Slobo, in much the same manner the German U-- 2 bombings of London rallied the English around Churchill (although entirely different conditions and reasons existed during WWII). Maybe the fruits of Clinton's artful, albeit shameful, avoidance of military service are exposing yet another rtf his inadequacies, this time for his lack of basic military protocol. Especially the given; that you con- fer with officers of the highest experience for their counsel and advice on decision making. Then you follow it. Presently, the White House crew, along with some of the Prezs rs ambassadors and other are singing the same "well goes the war chorus. We have heard so many anemic White House fabrications disguising Presidential weaknesses that there are many who now believe virtually none of what they say. Word is that Slobo's grip is being systematically weakened, his equipment terribly damaged, supply routes severed, fuel depots obliterated, armament suppliers and manufacturers locations destroyed, and in general, how we are winning. I hope at least some of it is true. . So when Congress finally says we cant do a "mop-u- p job without ground troops, then Clinton, in his finest hour of "parsing will say, " spin-maste- Kosovo, Congress did." And he will think to himself, "I have lied only once, and told the truth hundreds of times. Its interesting to note that Bill Kristol (TVs Face the Nation), made the statement, "Not one of Clinton's group (including Clinton and four others of the inner circle') has had any military experience. Cokie Roberts (Face the Nation) in reference to the upcoming presidential election said, "...the main problem, some say, is AI Gore (hu) a (political) smell rubbed onto him from Clinton. Bill Bradley is gaining ground on Gore, and in fact, won the Michigan poll by 20 points. George Will (Face the Nation) commented, "Do we want to extend the Clinton era, or bring the curtain down? It does appear as if Gore is rapidly being buried by the so-call- ed "Clinton legacy, and may, in fact, be unable to unearth himself. I would hope that Bill Clinton, in a perhaps frantic effort to his tainted presidential image, has not used poor judgment by accelerating America into another kmgtime-no-fi- x, Balkans quagmire. At least, one wrong has been righted during his Presidency. Judge Susan Wright (Arkansas trial of the Paula Jones case), found him "guilty of contempt of court, for lying and obstructing justice, and said that his responses before the court were, ...designed to obstruct the criminal process. As an attorney, Clinton could be and should be - disbarred and prohibited from practicing law again. Thought for the day: To judge a man means nothing more than to ask: What content does he give to the form of humanity? What concept should we have of humanity if he were its only representativeTJ Wilhelm Von Humboldt (1797) j didn't order ground troops into Pam's PLace I believe I am personally in a state of "denial and "shell shock to say the least, with all the shooting incidents that has hit the news waves recently. It is bad enough to hear of the ravages of war in countries throughout the world, the heartache of viewing the photos of the people living in areas many have never even heard of before. As we watch, our hearts fill with gratitude it isnt us, while we pray for their safety and the lives of our service men and women, who are daily putting their lives on the line for our freedom and theirs. When the incidents hit closer to home and hearth, it takes on a com- pletely different connotation and touches the heart even more so. Word spread quickly as it does when things are horrible-Th- e church History Building in Salt Lake has been hit with gunfire! WHAT??? Yes, it is true, they said. Two people lost their lives by "being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Families were left to grieve over the tragedy that could have probably been preventable with new "policies and procedures" allowing people requesting "help for mental illness to receive the needed response. I was even more stunned when 1 heard that the family tit the perpetrator was suing. (We have truly become a g society, haven't we?) Next, on the list! A shooting on SR 224-- 1 mean, reality check time folks. Think you are safe driving su-in- along enjoying yourself? We are becoming such a group erf as we rush to get from one place to hot-hea- another, that instead of allowing ourselves more time and a little would rather just shoot patience-w- e someone for getting in our way. NEWS FLASH!!! Columbine School in Littleton, Colorado hu been taken over by several youths killing other youths because they were shunned! What a horrible, tragic turn of events for families who sent their children to school thinking they were going to be safe while trying to get an education. The education we all received was one of heart-fe- lt sympathy for - family, friends, a community at a whole. What large and a nation is happening to our society? How nice it would be to be able to return to a time when families were united, they ate meals together, they visited with neighbors on porch swings, helped one another when needed and kids weren't shot for u just being themselves. On the flip side-th- e one given that hu struck me, is WHY don't Just Sruff of his diversions, via perhaps a a we accept and help those students who need help? It is a sad day "uniforms u bit-ter- when youth are struck down to senselessly, patrons of a history center are shot at and a lone driver loses a kidney-al- l because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thank heavens for the good people and good things in life. There are so many "angels among us" jf we take time to search for the good aspects on life in this ever changing world of ours. We can't go back in time, but we can help to give to our and neighbors, friends, family members. 1 have been so impressed by many of the youth in our community as I hear or write about their achievements, and growth. There are a lot of "good kids floating around. R QUOTE BY FRANCIS "If you live for love you HEG-MEYE- spread kindness and compassion everywhere you go. "Did you hear about the shootings? he asked. "And there could be explosives in a truck! I couldn't believe it. Two innocent people killed, as well as the suspect, and others severely injured. And a suspicious truck a few blocks away that might contain explosives! This wasn't a headline from New York. It wasn't news from L.A. This was at the LDS Family History Museum, just a block away from my office! I turned on the TV to get the details. The Channel S News folks were being evacuated from their offices, as were others in the ment officers jumped to conclusions. They should have known the truck wun't involved. If they felt their safety was jeopardized, of course they could leave. She called a few minutes later and said the "big boss had issued an evacuation of the building. They were closing up shop. Of course we now know that the truck and the shootings were not related. There were no explosives. No bombs. It wasn't an act of terrorism. It wasnt a conspiracy.
