Show Rtf' NMti wueitamiSw April 16, 1999 Tell Me About It RivAlny Can Be Fun..: by For some time now, one of my favorite humorists, Garrison Or Worse Lon Slmlster two men seem to have a rivalry for garnering attention. Rivalry is found in almost everything you do: in athletics, have taken on a hard edge. An article in the Salt Lake Tribune quotes him as saying to Ventura (over the air), You have the I.Q. of a salad bar. If you were any dumber. We'd have to water you," This satirical wit has not escaped the attention of Ventura, either, who has denied he seeks revenge, his astute comment being that Minnesota Radio does not need state funds." among friends and neighbors over everyday things, between communities, cities, states, and - of a more serious nature between countries or nations. Much of this rivalry is of the friendly, competitive variety, but some is downright alarming. One particularly offensive type of rivalry - the kind wearing on yours truly the worst - is political rivalry. If there were any way of knowing, it would be my opinion that more skullduggery and downright harmful acts of vengeance are performed as a means to a political solution than for any other problem. Probably most of the wars ever fought have commenced due to some obsessive political reason. I believe this, because I am firmly convinced that there are politics involved in almost every solution, or attempted solution, to any problem facing mankind. Don't think so? The very definition of politics makes this opinion obvious, " Politic , adj. 1: characterized by shrewdness in managing, contriving or dealing," (Webster's), Mix into that the human greed equation, "What's in it for me? and you've got the stirrings of a real mess. Greed has many forms, too. It isn't just the idea of a "second helping" or stashing away a few bucks for a rainy day. Nor is it just the impetuousness of buying everything you think you need just to impress others. Many times it's nothing more than satisfying a huge ego, getting your name on a plaque, The transmitters which relay Minnesotas public radio broad- being the BMOC, the first to "know," the go-tguy, or just casts are funded by the state. These plain control. has Keillor, been jabbing and irritating Minnesota's newly elected (a shocking political surprise) Governor, Jesse (The Body) Ventura, with his blunt, rather caustic observations of the Guv. Ventura is a former pro wrestler and built like a brick Pagoda, while Keillor, as you will recall, is the tall. spindly-Iookin- g who's always talking nerdy-typ- e, as he sits on a stool with his red socks showing. home-spu- n narrator A low-keof folksy tales on a Minnesota y, Public Radio station (most of e which deal with his tales of life in his invented location down-hom- of Lake Wocbegon) he seems total- ly unaware that he would be no match for one of Ventura's or other mutilating clutches and grabs. Ever since the Minnesota elections, he's been delivering a lot of catchy remarks about Ventura, but the humorist's humor seems to o" In this day and age where the "parsing" of words, intentional misleading statements, broken decision-makin- promises, delayed inept and controversial wielding of authority, gross manipulation, and substance-lackin- g wearying, excuses have become the norm for leadership qualifications, no wonder there are "quagmires" worldwide. Until we, as individuals, start not accepting this kind of behavior by those who think they're fooling us, then its going to get worse and worse until there is no chance for improvement, and the future for our posterity will get murkier and murkier. Like it or not, the political game half-bake- g, d, is always being played, and it seems like the election rhetoric is starting earlier this time around. They say "a new broom sweeps clean," and I'm for trying that. The trick is deciding which politicians to keep and which ones to send down the road. As a citizen, I'm surely not proud of having in office - by his wifes own description-"...th- e most investigated President in history. And to elect another someone in lock-ste- p with Clintonesque strategies, who walks like, talks like, and was trained by the master "parser" of all times, would be a lesson in futility. To do so might even bring us to for the verge of the America. There are too many other excellent candidates who would strengthen, not weaken, the Office of President of the United States. Thought for the day: "The more weakness, the more falsehood; strength goes straight... Jean Paul weakness must lie." Richter, German writer. coup-de-gra- ning to think whoever said weekends were "a time to rest is badly mistak- en. At least from my angle it doesn't work out that way. Seems as if they are the busiest time instead of the most relaxing. Lets see, on Saturday I attended two funerals. Even though funerals are sad events, it is also good to see family members again as was the case when I got to see my nephew, Steve, from Canada who I haven't seen for a long time. I guess one of the more interesting things when someone passes away, is learning more of their personality. Someone you thought you knew often has qualities or gifts you never imagined they possessed until attending the funeral or memorial service. Too bad we don't it until after they are gone. I must admit, some are missed more than others, perhaps because often realize they endear themselves to us through their actions or the way they "touch our souls." I will sure miss my buddy "Lynn thats for sure!!!l To end the day, my hubby and I went to a movie with one of our sons, Rodney and his wife, Camellia. It certainly helped to brighten the day after so much sadness. On Sunday I received a call from my Aunt Mae and Uncle Jess, say to visit in the afternoon. What fun to see them and my cousin and wife as well since it had been awhile. It is rather nice to sit home and have people come to visit, but guess I should do of the traveling once in awhile as well. Later, we enjoyed having our yard fill with laughter as several of our "kids" came to visit. The weather was just to nice to sit inside. Then, in the early morning hours (1:00 am.) our youngest son arrived home from a school trip to California. Since we had purchased a different vehicle while he was gone, he wanted to go "for a drive. Needless to say, by the time we talked and visited, it was 2:30 am. much too late for "old people like me to be up, but it wu just so great to have him home again. I am noticing more and more how passive people are becoming when it comes to events taking place around them. Maybe it is because folks are so involved in their own lives there isn't time, or maybe its the thought that if it isn't happening to me, why should I care." Looking at scenes of the Kosovo incident actually turn my stomach as my heart goes out to those suffering, when all they really want to do is just live their lives. In the past I have watched movies, read books and heard incidents of Hitler's power struggle and it is hard to believe that someone is now trying to pretty much do the same thing all over again. One thing our involvement in the situa D-da- y. tion has done is cause many people to be divided on the subject-tha- ts for sure. Previously, I have written about finding "hidden messages" or "nflt reading the fine print, and sure enough, it crept into my life once again. When my hubby and I were to looking around at vehicles-tryin- g find one to purchase, it came to my. attention that although the sticker might give you a price, it rarely was the out the door' quote. There are taxes, undercoating or some other "you need this type of option available, and it soon adds up to be much greater than the amount you had agreed upon to spend. It is nice when you finally find the type of car you wanted at the price you can afford, (well, not really but it is cheaper than some of them). And fen me, the difference often come with the personality of the salesperson. Too pushy-an- d I am out of there in a big hurry, (makes me wonder why they want to get rid of their product). Anyway, I am still driving the old car because it just "feels" right after spending so much time in it. It just seems to know where to go, as we have been on the road together so much. Must admit, however, the new one is nice to cruise along in well. Thought for the week "If you live for love you spread kindness and compassion everywhere you go. When you stop believing in your heart you are but a sterile vessel wandering in the wilderness." Thanks go out to all of you in our community who have made our reading program worthy of being used as an example of what can happen when a community pulls together. This is a feather in the collective hat of everyone living in the North Summit area. I'd say we are State Champions in the community. This years theme is Treasure Your Library. For ten weeks well be hunting for all the buried treasures in the library and the Bookmobile. You will want to register for the area where you wish to participate. Well, I'm certainly making no proclamations as to the weather this week. Mother Nature has proven me wrong the last two weeks, hitting us with yet another dose of Winter on Friday. This was despite, or perhaps in spite, of my declaration that Spring was definitely here. So, I'm avoiding the weather. Winter or otherwise, this week. Of course, that leaves me in need of an idea about which to write. The weather is always fair game for a column. But, being that its mid-Aprtwo topics come to mind. It's a sort of sure fire savings plan. You don't have it to spend over the course of the year. Kraig and I, on the other hand, have a hard time justifying Uncle Sam having use of our money until absolutely necessary. Why should the government have use of it, when we could be using it? Consequently, we try to have enough withheld from each to avoid penalties, realizing pay-che- ck we will, most likely, end up paying a little at the end of the year. Unfortunately, the "little at the end of the year," always ends up being less "little" than I want. The folks at the IRS always say they're entitled to more than I want to pay. And, as I write out the check, I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't be less painful to hold out more over the year. Spread the pain out over the whole year. Bottom line is, it doesn't matter. Uncle's going to get his Not something many teenagers can say about their parents. Yes, I knew she was pretty terrific as I was growing up. But, it wasn't until I was an adult and had children of my own that I realized just how special she is. how much she's given over the years. I could go on for pages about what a great parent she has been, and is, and how much she means to me. But, let's suffice it to say that my mom is the kind of mom I want to be. I hope, as my boys grow, I will be able build the kind of relationship with them that I have with my mom and that I can be the kind of mom to them that my mom is to me.
