Keating's laboratory has discovered genes associated with supra valvular aortic stenosis (SVAS), an abnormality of the blood vessels which may lead to heart failure and death, and Williams Syndrome, a developmental disorder characterized by both mental retardation and specific behavioral traits. SVAS occurs in approximately one in 25,006 births and primarily affects children. Keating's laboratory also has discovered three genes for long QT syndrome, the most common inherited cardiac arrhythmia that causes sudden death in young, otherwise healthy people. Long QT syndrome affects an estimated 20,000 Americans and is thought to cause 0 deaths a year. While the inherited condition is rare, finding the three genes responsible for the disease suggests possible strategies for treating more common heart arrhythmias which kill an estimated 400,000 Americans a year. Keating joined the U medical school faculty in 1989, and was the first physician-scienti- st to be accepted to the Eccles Program in Human Molecular Biology and Genetics (riMBG). HMBG is an interdepartmental program that encourages the application of genetic icsearch to numan health by building an interface between research and clinical medicine. Investigators hold joint appointments in the 50-20- (rait-m- as Riding in Shopping Carts Riding in a shopping cart can be fun for kids, but it can also be dangerous. Mishaps with shopping carts send some 25,000 children to emergency rooms each year, many with head and neck injuries. Most result from falling out of the carts and are preventable if a child is simply strapped in. However, the second leading cause of injuries is tipovers, the prevention of which would require a redesign of the carts themselves. The manufacturer is looking into a modification that will allow a child to ride lower to the ground. m HMBG program and a department and are freed from other responsibilities to commit their time to researching specific causes of human diseases. Keating completed his appointment with HMBG in 1995 and was selected as an investigator for the Howard Hughe Medical Institute. He holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and a medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University. He completed his graduate medical education there and at the University of California, San Francisco. The Veasy chair was established earlier this year to honor one of. Now, however, a study of 1,800 women by the City University of New York found that those who ate more than 40 of their calories after 5:00 p.m. were no more likely to add weight than those who ate smaller amounts at night Furthermore, researchers say calories consumed after 8:00 p.m. -the typical time for t.v. watching and snacking - don't add up to. weight gain any more than those eaten at breakfast. One warning, however persons who eat at night usually don't eat as well and consume more alcohol and fatty foods. And that will put on the pounds. PhlveTspur FRANCIS Best Food, Fuk, AND FEOPLE!
