East juzcncoir Mar " VP ilWTUmifftTM Matthias Kuntzsch Leads Utah Exciting Symphony in Evening Music Drama, and lots of it will be the order of business in the fourth Utah Symphony Masterworks con- cert of the Internationally 1996-9- 7 season. known Guest Conductor Matthias Kuntzsch will lead the orchestra in performances of the overture to Shumann's gripping Manfred and Bruckner's masterfully complex Symphony & . The German-bor- n Kuntzsch brings a wealth of experience to these pieces. He began his career in 1957 and has worked with such companies as the Basque National Symphony and the Bayreuth Festival. Kuntzsch's dramatic flair cornea with yean of work with major opera companies and was evi dent in his last appearance with the Utah Symphony, conducting the 1812 Overture in a style described as being, "As full to watch as to listen to." The concert will begin with the Manfred: Overture, which has been called probably the "greatest piece of purely orchestral music Shumann ever achieved." Manfred is the musical interpretation of the Byron poem of the same name and Shumann was so moved by it that he claimed to have devoted more , love and exertion on it than on any other composition. ' ' The second work of the evening . will be a performance of Bruckner's Symphony 5. This controversial work was Bruckner's masterpiece; and Maestro Kuntzsch is an expert ' 1996 marks the interpreter 100th anniversary Bruckner's death, and this year has seen a dramatic increase in his popularity. With this performance of the Symphony t8, Utah Audiences will hsve a dunce to find out why. Matthias Kuntzsch's visit may also be a preview of things to come, as the conductor is one of the candidates being considered for of Music Director after next year's retirement of Maestro Silveretein.
