An electric ray has special muscles in its body that can give off shocks of up to 200 volts. That's almost twice the power of ' the electric current in your home. Newly hatched turtles, naturally attracted to the sea by the rising or setting sun, are easily disoriented by artificial lights from beachfront development. So. several Florida counties and towns have passed ordinances restricting beach lighting between May and October, the prime sea turtle nesting season. A protective ordinance requires that beachfront lights be turned off after 11 p.m. or shielded so they don't shine directly on the beach. The penalty for not complying? A 500 a day fine and possible jail sentence. It may never rain cats and dogs, but it did rain fish in ' England in 1859. Strong winds of a storm can sometimes such up all sorts of small things from the ground or even the water. Then miles away. these things fall from the sky. In 1922. spiders rained on Hungary, and in 1982, two frogs dropped out of the sky in Dubuque. Iowa. Birds have been known to u$e some rather unusual building materials for their nests. A pair of canyon wrens in Fresno, Calif, built a two and one half pound nest entirely of paper clips and other office supplies. The best we could do was the remaining picnic table by the inoperable drinking fountain. In six minutes everything was set up and the wait for the rest of our family, near and far, began. According to a recent article, elephants also have an artistic bent. One elephant at a Syracuse. New York zoo, for instance, has created more than 200 drawings and paintings since being given paper and pens in 197b. Experts say that the fact, that the elephant productions are reasonably centered on each page and that each one is "finished" indicates that the elephant does have some sense of art and good form. Lunch signaled the beginning of the end for all the kids brought to -- the annual gala. With the end of lunch came the program where each loving set of parents forced their little ones to bore the rest of the family to tears. Four songs, a poem, three stories, and three dances later it ended. And everyone was still there, though Uncle Rufus had to be awakened three times during the 46 minutes and 17 seconds of. pure torture. But we loved it, and I know this is true because we will force the sweet little things to perform again next year! A tear here, a scraped knee there, laughter through most of the afternoon, signaled the good feelings shared and the good memories that would last beyond the day. The day soon faded into evening. It was about time to see the fireworks that cousin Elmo had set up for the evenings patriotic entertainment. As we stood waiting for the first rocket to produce a red glare, it seems the younger of the children remembered more than anyone else what the day was all about. The strains of "the Star Spangled Banner" filled the air on the voices of some awfully small angels. The words weren't exactly the same as those penned so long ago by Francis Scott Key, but the feelings behind them hadn't changed. Then, rockets soared to fill the sky with color. Excitement rose until all eyes were focussed heavenward. People are coming to learn that one of the initiatives that is being circulated for signature is nothing more than a bill providing a source of income and population data so that a law on tax limitation, based on the peoples ability to pay and that has been on the books since 1979, can be put into force. At one end you have legislators like Nolan Karras who talk in public about waste in government and who apparently think the solution to the problem is to raise taxes. On the other end you have a fast growing number of Utahns who are fed up with the use of the 4'x8 slab of cement that is covered by a bent and rusted piece of tin that everyone are very often dumping grounds.
