A student body dance was held at South Sumit on Friday, March Pictures WASHINGTON February 29, 1984 : ! deal to me and With my warm I treasure your friendship! best wishes for the years ahead, Sincerely , Second Grade Class South Summit Elementary North Main Kamas, UT This last month, February, is a special month every four years as it makes up for the Vi day missing from the other three years. The history of the missing Vi day started in the days of Julius Caesar, who in reforming the calendar, arranged that in every fourth year an extra day be added to the month of February. The length of the normal year is a little less than 365 Vi days and so if you add a day each four years it makes up the V day missing from the other three years. The name leap year is probably due to the notion that the calendar takes a leap every four years. Every year is a leap year which is divisible by four without any remainder, except the concluding years of centuries every fourth of which is a leap year. The normal traditions for leap day is that girls of high and low stations may propose to the man of their choice without their conduct being considered unladylike. Nobody really knows how this got mixed up with leap year, but it seems to have started in the 1500s when Scotland passed a law that the lady may propose and if the man should refuse, all of his properties and estates could and sometimes would, be taken away unless he could prove that he was already engaged to another girl. These laws were later passed in France and Germany. We know today, that these laws no longer hold true, but, the tradition is still the same. We decided on this day, to walk around our school and see if any girl did as the tradition allowed. We only found one girl who did propose and got married on the 29th of February. But of course, they really didnt get married, but it was good for a day! We hope that your March started off with a nice leap!
