Show OPINION PAGE SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS A2 MAY 1, 2015 LOCAL NEWS NOTES ENVIROTHON WINNER 2015 The team from Wasatch High School won the 2015 Envirothon Competition. We helped the team with preparations including a 90 minute presentation with Q and A, example Community Forest Management plans, inventories including the FFSL software app, and the Utah Preferred Species list. Thank you for your support. A. Jason Barto, Community Forester, ISA Certified Arborist, TRAQ, Wasatch Back Trees, ACTrees member A Fun Summer Camp-out — Close to Home! RETRACTION OF STATEMENT MADE IN LAST WEEKS SCN It was noted that in the article Richard Bullough, that it was mentioned he was a Deseret News Editor. That statement was not a true fact. The SCN apologizes for that error. FRANCIS ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION AND COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING Please join us at 830 a.m., on May 9, at Francis City Park, 2317 Spring Hollow Road, for an Arbor Day Celebration and Community Tree Planting. We will be planting 10 trees. These trees will be "bare root" Bur Oaks, Japanese Lilacs, and Autumn Blaze Maples-all from the UCFC Utah Preferred list (the complete list is available via the front page of our website wasatchbacktrees.org) This will be our first "bare root" planting. Bare root trees are less expensive, weigh less and have potentially better root structure than their "Balled and Burlap" and "Container" grown cousins. Come join us for this exciting event! School is nearly to the end of the year 2014-2015! Hard to believe, but true. It is time to plan summer fun, and what Utah has to offer is "...close to home!" With the rising price of gasoline, and the "prospected prices up-coming" it would be wise to stay near home and visit the many "Wonders of the World" we have at our "finger-tips!" The State and National Parks are not that far from us, and camping, fishing, sightseeing as well as hiking, ATV fun, photo-shooting, and family outings are possible with very "little" travel to worry about! Reserve a suite, take the family and ENJOY! It will be a vacation you will always remember, be there in less than 5 hours, and minimum use of that expensive gasoline! People come from Europe, as well as all over the United States to enjoy what we have in our own "backyards!" Do It!!! And make memories ALL of the family can come to! r 1 To Subscribe (cut this form out and send) Circle option desired and pay by mail, e-mail or phone with credit card information Send to: (cut and paste address on an envelope) The Wasatch Wave P.O. Take the Envision Utah survey Envision Utah, under the direction of Governor Herbert, launched the Your Utah, Your Future effort at the beginning of April. To date, less than 15,000 Utahns have taken the survey (50,000 are needed). The data from this effort will help state leaders build a long-term game plan to prepare for future issues across the entire state like water resources, air quality, agriculture, energy, education and jobs. Because this ini- tiative effects every Utahn, it's important that feedback is received from everywhere, not just the Salt Lake Valley. Eastern Summit County has not been well represented in the survey effort and I'd like to see if you would be interested in interviewing a spokesperson from Envision Utah by phone or in person if necessary to talk about the effort and the importance for North and South Summit towns to have a voice. Old Happenings From Coalville Times 1860 Using Parley's Route A company of missionaries, who left Salt Lake City May 1, went via Parley's Park, where a portion of the family of Samuel Snyder resides, Samuel operating a saw mill there which is "three miles from the mill." On Thursday, May 3, the missionaries and men on business going for freight etc., as well as a discharged soldier "moved on and camped on Chalk Creek, near the coal bed." On Friday, they "camped on Bear River on the Simpson route." Jh cr 100-137 #17 7june 1860 Thursday p.14 Rockport (Enoch City) In August 1860, Rockport, then called Enoch City was settled by Henry Reynolds, Edmund Hortin, John Hortin and Henry Seamons, all of who came from Omaha. NB. During the Black Hawk war, Rockport settlers went to Wanship. After the Indian trouble, the settlers moved back and built a rock wall or fort around one quarter of an acre, from which the name Rockport was originated. In 1872, a post office was established with Henry Seamons as postmaster. "That troublesome and rather dangerous complaint, la grippe, paid us a visit here, and nearly everyone has had a touch of it, with more or less severity." The road between here and Evanston is half bare of snow, and it is ok for wheeled vehicles. This is almost unprecedented for this season of the year, when the snow is usually 3-4' deep.
