Honored from Coalville was Dwayne Robinson, 83! The event was the Ceremony and presentation of the Republic of Korea Ambassador for Peace Medal to Utah Korean War Veterans...a "Thank You" ...to the United States of America for 60 years of Commitment...60 Years of Friendship. This "Ambassador for Peace Medal" was an expression of appreciation from the Government of the Republic of Korea to U.S. Service "men and women" who served in the Korean War!" The Medal as was presented by the Ambassador for Peace from Korea to Dwayne is pictured. Recipients listed (117 named) were honored on the 23rd of April, 2015. This particular ceremony was held at the Central Utah Veterans Home in Payson, Utah. Throughout Utah, 181 Utah Korean War Veterans will be recognized for their service. The "cease-fire" was signed on 27th July 1953. The Korean War was the "...first war which the U.N. played a role." Sixteen countries responded when aid was needed in South Korea, and 41 sent aid and / or equipment. Countries sending troops were Australia -2,282; Belgium - 944; Canada 6,646; Colombia - 2,068; Ethiopia - 1,271; France 1,271 - France - 1,119; Greece - 1,263; Luxembourg - (unknown); Netherlands - 819; New Zealand - 1,389; Philip- pines - 1,496; South Africa 826; Thailand - 1,294; Turkey - 5,455; United Kingdom 14,198; United States 348,000. It was stated that "...China joined and fought on the side of North Korea, with military equipment sent them by the Soviet Union. The responded to the call following the outbreak on the 25th of June, 1950! About 90% of those troops sent were from the United Stated! From Utah, about 17,000 served, and 141 made the "ultimate sacrifice"! This past week 181 Utah Korean War Veterans were recognized personally for their service. The presentation of the Medal of Honor to each Veteran was presented on behalf of the Korean Servicemen. They were then honored by him as the guest speaker; Han Dong-Man, Consul, General, The Emergency Medical Technician class of South Summit High School is nearly done with its training. Last week the class was introduced to Dr. Iverson, of the Kamas / Coalville Medical Clinic. Students were monitored by Iverson and the course trainer Andrea McNeil while performing a trauma assessment. While the students have been doing this procedure throughout the year, this test was a prequel to qualifying at the state level. The class of eleven students has been training the entire school year to work in various scenarios devised by Mz. McNeil. Colby Averett, Taigon Fletcher, Thailer James, Skylier Leavitt, Hadli Murray, Natalie Nichols, Isabelle Olsen, Kassi Pitt, Hunter Reis, and Giovanna Shannon will be taking the state test to be licensed EMT's this summer. Republic of Korea! Visitors were again honored to hear both the National Anthems of the United States as well as the Republic of Korea. Each recipient was presented a certificate, written in Korean, as a Proclamation thanking them for their service! The "Medal of Honor" has a special pin that can be removed and worn separately from the larger medal and inserted into the small Medal of Honor to be worn on a suit or other special attire. Families and friends were able to attend and participate in this ceremony. K9 G'orka Awarded Ballistic Vest from Occasions Groupon Grassroots Grant Francis resident honored Wednesday H69 L40 Partly Cloudy Opinion Emergency students Mickey Grames The Utah Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) has awarded Mickey Grames of Francis, UT their Trailblazer Award. The award was recently presented to Ms. Grames at an Awards Luncheon in recognition of her contributions to small business over the past 20 years that also contributed to economic growth and development in Utah. A former corporate executive, Ms. Grames moved to Utah in 1990 and started a small business consulting firm. For 18 years she assisted over 300 Utah businesses get financing for their business allowing for growth and job creation. During that time she was also an adjunct professor at the University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College and later at the University of Massachusetts, teaching business planning and financial management for small business. More recently she was a commercial lender for Zions Bank and is now the Programs Manager for the Utah Microenterprise Loan Fund. Currently she is a trustee and Board Chair for the Summit County Library, a member of the Professional Advisory Council for Independence University in Salt Lake and a Board advisor to a corporation headquartered in Chicago. Her past credits include Francis Planning Commissioner, Founder and Board Chair of the Cancer Wellness House; chair of the Workforce Services Board as well as serving on numerous chamber of commerce and business boards and committees. Mickey and her husband have been residents of Francis for the past 9 years where they enjoy the quality lifestyle of the Kamas Valley. Nationwide Groupon Campaign raises over $335,000 for law enforcement K9 protective vests The Summit County Drug Enforcement Agency's Metro Narcotics Department K9 G'orka has received a ballistic vest thanks to a nationwide GROUPON EVENT that has raised over $335,000. K9 G'orka is a fairly new deputy with only two years' experience with his handler but G'orka has an exceptional track record of sniffing out narcotics. G'orka and his handler have located a number of drug hides in luggage, postal boxes and vehicles. In fact, it was G'orka who located the larges methamphetamine stash in Summit County history which was just over 30 pounds.
