Show SCHOOL NEWS APRIL 24, 2015 PAGE A5 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Poetry Contest More Jr. Prom Concert held April 15 SSMS South Summit High School Band and Jazz Band both participated in the Region Band Festival held at South Summit Middle School on Wednesday, April 15. Both bands received all Superior ratings and qualified to go to the State Band Festival, which will be held at Corner Canyon High School in Draper Utah on May 1. If you would like to hear these amazing bands, put their spring concert on your calendar for April 30, at 7 p.m., at the South Summit High School auditorium. What do South Summit Middle Schools fifth graders have in common with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow? A love of poetry! They each memorized a poem to compete for a chance to represent our school in the Fourth Annual Poetry Recitation Contest sponsored by the Summit County Library. Twenty-five finalists performed their memorized poems to determine the final three that will represent our school on Monday April 27, from 6-8 p.m., at the Sheldon Richins Building Auditorium. Finalist included Lily Hathaway, Dylan Broadbent, McKenzie Patino, Gibson Walton, Amy Betournay, Treven Lassche, Roper Frantz, Gage Pineda, Chastity Wilson, Reece Petersen, McKenna Smart, Kayli Wilde, Joshua Harris, Jessica Strebel, Eden Thomas, Alexis Atkinson, Victoria Cannon, Ashlyn Smith, Ellie Reidhead, Trinley Singer, Emma Olson, Alana Livingston, Regan Folker, Derek Allen, and Charlee Eastin. Moving on to compete at the County Level are: 1st McKenzie Patino; 2nd Amy Betournay, and 3rd Treven Lassche. Wednesday, April 22, South Summit honored their senior soccer members at their last home region matchup against Maeser Prep. The Cats have been led this year in the Forward positions by Colby Averett son of Jason Averett and Missy Averett and Halen Rockhill son of Justin and Ally Rockhill. Team Keeper / Goalie is Sam Louder son of David and Joan Louder. And in the Defender role is Harley Georgi son of Mike and Tammy Georgi. The team has had a great second half of the season beating teams with longstanding successful soccer programs. The boys are striving for a deep run in the state tournament. Continued teamwork will be the key to advancing in the postseason. We wish the team the best of luck and send a hardy thanks to our four senior workhorses who have been imperative to the success this season. Posted in the Summit County News. The North Summit Cupcake Bakers provided 516 cupcakes for Veterans and their families at the VA Medical Center on April 14, 2015. The N.S. Bakers partnered with the Veteran Advisory Council (VAC) and VA sexual trauma staff to bring attention to the help available for victims of sexual abuse and to let victims know where they can find that help. Many victims suffer for years in silence, while others are victimized daily, most don't know that there is help available; abuse needs to stop, there is help. Members of the VAC, along with VA mental health staff, passed out freshly frosted cupcakes to willing recipients. The cupcakes were decorated with teal colored ribbons, the symbol of support for victims of abuse; additional information was Employment Opportunity Coalville City - Seasonal Laborer Coalville City has an opening for a part-time Seasonal Public Works Laborer.
