Show OPINION SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A2 APRIL 24, 2015 LOCAL NEWS NOTES A Sunny Day in Summit County Enjoy the sun, and the "spring" fever everyone seems to have right now! The trees are being trimmed, lawns being "watered" sparingly, and the foliage is "showing"! Spring is finally coming, it's here! The "bug" people get when the weather becomes warmer is also visible...as gardening is the next item on the calendar. It is still cool at night, though, so be careful what is planted! Enjoy spring, prepare for the colorful array of flowers blooming in about a month or so, and then...kids will be out of school and the summer will be upon us! Outside activities are already being tried by the children after school, and pretty soon, school will be out! Enjoy!!!! Recycling Tip For The Week... Don't Be a Dirty Dumper Disposing of Hazardous Waste AUTHOR: ZACH SROKA Lightbulbs, TVs, and batteries oh my! All of these household electronics must go out of commission at some point. But when they do, where do they go? Well first I'll tell you where they shouldn't go...the trash can! All of these (and many more) are classified as hazardous waste and if they are disposed of improperly, they can have detrimental effects on the environment. Here are some tips, tricks, and facts to make sure you aren't just another dirty dumper. • Know your waste! Here's a list of common hazardous waste products that should NEVER be thrown away in the trash: batteries, all electronics, chargers, medicine, lightbulbs, paint, any toxic cleaning supplies, car fluids (oil, gas, etc.), pesticides, and many, many more. This list could go on for miles so if you're ever unsure about throwing something away, look it up before you do! • Why is this important? Great question! You enjoy clean drinking water right? Of course you do! When hazardous waste is not disposed of properly, it ends up in the landfill where all of those harmful chemicals can contaminate our watershed. And if they're burned, those harmful chemicals can contaminate the air. So...where do they go? • Bring it to us! Here at Re- cycle Utah, we accept all kinds of hazardous waste including CFL lightbulbs, batteries, thermometers and thermostats, cell phones, chargers and other electronic waste. • But wait, there's more! May 2 is the totally FREE Summit County Collection Day for Hazardous Wastes. This event will take place at the Cabriolet Parking Lot at Canyons Resort. Almost all forms of hazardous waste are accepted so come on down May 2 and rid of your waste responsibly!
