Show HEALTH APRIL 10, 2015 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A7 TeleStroke - new "Telehealth Service" for stroke patients CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor BE FAST! Seconds count when a stroke occurs! Dial 911 immediately! If possible within the first five minutes of noticing the first signs of a stroke if with someone who has these symptoms: "B" for balance. Sudden loss of balance or coordination "E" for sudden change in vision "F" for sudden weakness of the face "A" for sudden weakness of an arm or leg "S" for sudden difficulty speaking "T" be sure to note the time symptoms started The Intermountain Park City Medical Center (PCMC) has now "launched" a new service that could help both patient and hospital staff ...quickly diagnose and treat stroke patients". These two little words ...BE FAST! ...family, friends and neighbors need to remember and which could mean the "...difference between in improving outcomes for stroke patients and in some cases mean the difference between "...longterm damage, or the possibility of 'complete' recovery from a stroke." // quick and efficient treatment. With a "stroke", time and treatment is of the essence, and can mean the difference of level of recovery to a "more normal" life versus one of paralysis which could result in loss of life! Treatment that could mean, as with a stroke patient, receiving medication such as an enzyme which dissolves a blood clot, thus preventing or minimizing brain damage and determining outcome of recovery. (During a stroke, 32,000 brain cells die every second!) Telehealth Services at the PCMC ICU is a way of pulling all of the best sources possible through communication quickly, without having to move the patient, and to check vital signs, lab work, patient progress, and consul- In an interview with Dan Davis, Nurse Administrator at PCMC, stated that PCMC with this "milestone" known as "Telehealth Services" at the PCMC ICU, not only serves stroke patients, but other patients who need ICU Services. They, along with the ICU staff at LDS Hospital, can communicate through modem technology via television screens, high powered cameras, and highly trained and experienced personnel in serving patients in need of this care - on the spot. They (LDS Hospital) are the command center with staff specialized in intensive medicine, providing the best care possible by communication which makes it possible to bring up medical records of ICU patients quickly with a "...higher level of care and consultative service" ...now able to not only see but also to monitor vital signs of the many aspects needed for in record time. Serving the patient with these services could mean, not only in stroke patients, but in other life-threatening situations, a difference between life and death or paralysis. The teleprompter is also the "Television". The camera is located directly in the center of each room, and both PCMC and LDS Hospital staff can see and communicate as if all in the same room. The patient can be checked out with monitors and equipment and all then recorded, as well as do the diagnostic testing. Communication with qualified technicians and physicians is used as needed in the best interests of the patient. The camera's high powered lens, for example, can view their bed. "These services", stated Davis, "are used every time there is a patient in the ICU. We use this link with every patient once or twice a day! It is ...like making the rounds' back in the days...!" The TeleStroke Service, via Telehealth Services, is another "...set of eyes", and an extra safety measure and service that can determine whether the patient should be moved or can be better served by staff consulting via Telehealth Services at PCMR. Milestones are made in the medical field all the time, and PCMR is ready to serve patients with these new services - to help patients and families have the quality of expertise needed towards recovery.
