Show S.S. SCHOOL NEWS PAGE A4 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS APRIL 10, 2015 Wildcat Softball Update The March 19-21 Warm-Up in St. George presented the nicest tournament weather that the Cats had played in since they started attending this early tournament. This series of games provides a great chance for coaches and players to look at the options and capabilities their team possesses. Batting orders and playing positions are up for grabs for players, and coaches can evaluate strengths and weaknesses in team rosters. Coaches and players realize that depth in catching and pitching, strong hitting lineups, and aggressive defensive play are a must in going deep in the state tournament. All of these were being evaluated as the Wildcats played in the warm Dixie weather. The 3A Dixie Flyers were first up on the schedule for the girls. The Varsity team started off the March 19 matchups. This game was a pitchers' battle. Sophomore HannahJo Peterson took the mound for the Wildcats against the Flyers senior Summer Simkins. Both teams ended the game with 7 hits, but the Cats were able to score one run and win the game. Peterson had a double and Sidney Vidrine hit a triple bringing in McKaye Woolstenhulme for the only run scored on the day. March 20 found the girls facing their first same daymultiple game situation. They started off with a cross region game against the Millard Eagles. A quick change in the pitching rotation had senior Taylor Reidhead facing the team from Millard for her first start of the year. She quickly got her motion down and went to work. The Eagles scored 3 in the top of the 1st, but a quick 10 runs for the Cats in the bottom of the inning was really the deciding factor. The Eagles were able to add only 2 more runs while the Cats put 9 more runs on 15 hits on the scoreboard before the game ended in the 5th with a 19-5 victory. Natalie Nichols added a triple from the lead off spot to get things moving, and a bright spot for the Wildcats was a solo home run shot by returning senior Stephanie Nagle who missed most of the last season after having knee surgery. Game two of the three scheduled was against a crossover region matchup Emery. The Wildcats kept their bats going scoring in 4 of the 5 innings ending with 16 runs scored. Emery kept the pressure on by scoring 5 in the last three innings and forcing the girls to concentrate on defense. Nichols pitched effectively and got the win. HJ Peterson had a triple and home run along with a double by Taylor Reidhead. A tournament game schedule change occurred when a team from California was unable to play more than 2 varsity games in one day. This change forced a pairing for the Cats with familiar opponent, the Summit Academy Bears. The Cats will face this team at least twice more as they are in our region. The bats were blazing for the Cats in this game with 12 hits. Elise Bush and McKaye Woolstenhulme both hit doubles, Sidney Vidrine helped her batting average adding 2 triples, and HannahJo Peterson spanked another home run shot. Jade Snyder handled the pitching duties for the Cats and did well holding the Bears scoreless. 18-0 was the final score. Saturday's matchups for the Cats proved the most interesting. The team faced off with the Juab Wasps first. Smart baserunning and time management made the difference for the Wasps in this battle. This was the only game were time was called before enough innings had been played. The Cats lost this close one 1-3. While a loss was recorded, much was learned from this game. The final game of the tournament was against another close rival, the Wasatch Wasps. It wasn't to be the Cats day against a second team of stinging pests. The persistent bats of the Wasps proved the difference in this game. They scored in every inning and beat the Cats 12-2. This win avenged a routing the Cats gave the Wasps last season when the two teams met in Heber. They will meet again later this season. Region play opened for the team on March 24 when they met the ALA Eagles in Sp. Fork. HJ Peterson's pitching and strong defense held the Eagles hitless while the Cats scored 16 runs. Sophomore Elise Bush hit a home run along with Peterson's double and triple. The JV LadyCats held their season opener against Duchesne Thursday, April 2, at the Oakley Complex. Both teams had to brace themselves for the winter-like conditions. This game was reminiscent of a usual cold spring in the Kamas Valley. The temperature was chilly, the wind was chillier, but that competitive spirit came out in both teams and they were not deterred. The Eagle bats were aggressive the first inning and scored 2 runs. The Cats scored 10 runs in the 6th inning to take the lead and ended the game at the top of the 7th. April 3 found the Cats on the road in Gunnison Valley. They were expecting another cold game and dressed to battle both the weather and the Lady Bulldogs. Peterson got the call to pitch. The Bulldogs were aggressive in the batter's box and had 10 hits on the day. The Cats countered with good team defense holding the Bulldogs to 4 runs in 7 innings. The Wildcats picked up their baserunning and scored 11 runs on 12 hits. Sidney Vidrine drove a first pitch up the middle for a double, Natalie Nichols slapped a line drive triple into the outfield, and HJ Peterson added a double and triple to round out the extra base hitting. The Bulldogs will visit Kamas April 9th. The North Summit Braves came to Oakley for the first of two games to be played in this region pairing. Reidhead, Jade Snyder, and Brooklyn Woolstenhulme handled the pitching duties for the Cats. Extra base hits were made by Peterson with a double and Rachel Rydalch with a triple. Nine hits by the Cats led to 14 runs. The final on this first outing was 14-1. These two teams will meet next in Coalville on April 21. The Cats will play in the Payson Tournament to end their week. Games are scheduled for 11am vs. Pineview, 1pm vs. Payson, 3 p.m. vs San Juan, and a fouth and final game at 7 p.m. vs. Springville.
