Show AROUND THE COUNTY FEBRUARY 27, 2015 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Detectives make arrests in rash of county vehicle burglary cases Summit County - Summit County Sheriff's Office Investigators have been working diligently over the last few weeks on leads following a rash of vehicle and residential burglaries. That hard work recently resulted in several arrests and recovery of several items taken during the burglaries. The majority of the cases occurred in the Jeremy Ranch area. Over a few days time, suspects travelled throughout the county seizing the opportunity to victimize unsuspecting citizens by entering unlocked vehicles and garages. High-end bicycles, expensive cameras, and computers were just some of the items stolen from many victims. Detectives from the Investigations Division started looking into leads just days after. One of the leads came from a car chase and apprehension in the Salt Lake Valley where two people were arrested and found to be in possession of some of the stolen property reported from a burglary in the Hidden Cove area and the Oakley area. Surveillance footage from a West Valley store developed after an unknown woman attempted to sell one of the stolen items from the Jeremy Ranch burglaries. She also happened to be in possession of a high-end road bike worth $10,000 which was taken from a garage in the Jeremy Ranch area. That bicycle, along with another expensive bicycle, has recovered in Las Vegas and detectives, working with Las Vegas Metro detectives, have been able to recover the bicycles and return them to the owner. Despite a very busy week in the county, Detectives Jed Williams and Joe Shuler were hot on these leads and ultimately made the identification and arrests of the suspects. Victor Hierz, 5 / 3 / 78, and Candace Mitchell, 5 /23 / 81 of Salt Lake City will be facing numerous charges related to the thefts in the Jeremy Ranch area. Jenifer Juergens, 4 /11 /91 and Dustin Sherratt, 9 /10 /91, have been charged for a vehicle burglary they admitted to in Oakley. Detectives are also looking into other suspects related to these cases, but are currently awaiting items of forensic evidence to be processed. Man who took aim at deputies, accomplice charged The Summit County Attorney's Office has charged Jarred Keith York, 27, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, with felony counts of assaulting a peace officer arising out of the manhunt that occurred February 6 in Henefer, Utah. Mr. York was the subject of a traffic stop in Morgan County when a deputy's routine records check revealed York's vehicle was uninsured. During the stop the deputy learned that York had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, and that Sheyanne Amanda Schmaltz (York's passenger) was the protected party in an order against York. When the deputy returned to York and asked him to step out of the vehicle, York put the car in drive and drove away. Morgan County deputies gave chase but terminated their pursuit just prior to the Summit County Line. Summit County deputies responded to Henefer to assist. After finding York's vehicle abandoned in Henefer, deputies and troopers worked to establish containment. Schmaltz was located inside a local gas station, at which time she sent text messages to York's phone stating that the police were looking for York and he should not come to the gas station. Multiple law enforcement officers engaged in a manhunt for York along the Weber River. Deputies saw York running northeast into the river bottoms of the Weber River. York was seen retrieving a handgun from his jacket, and he continued to move away from officers towards Interstate 84. Deputies saw York stand up and raise the gun, point it at a deputy for a moment, then squat back down. York stood up a second time and pointed his handgun at a different deputy. Two deputies fired shots at York, but York was not hit. York continued to move away from deputies and failed to obey their commands. Once York reached the interstate he was met by multiple deputies. York then placed the barrel of the gun under his chin. Sheriff Justin Martinez convinced York to drop the gun and be taken into custody. Officers located York's handgun and identified it as a heavy metal pellet gun that looked like a 1911 handgun. Mr. York has been charged with two felony counts of assaulting a peace officer, one count of violating a protective order, and one count of failing to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer. Each assault count is a second degree felony, punishable by up to 1-15 years in the Utah State Prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. The remaining counts are class A misdemeanors, punishable by up to 365 days in the county jail and a maximum fine of $2500. York is currently in custody and his bail is set at $250,000. The County Attorney's Office has also charged Sheyanne Amanda Schmaltz, 20, of Bennett, Colorado, with one count of obstructing justice, a class A misdemeanor. Mr. York was seen for an initial appearance on Feb. 12, at 2:30 p.m., in the Third District Court, Silver Summit Courthouse. The court appointed counsel and set York's next court date for February 23, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. Ms. Schmaltz's first court appearance is currently set for March 23, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. Snowmobilers... Black said it was an amazing sight for him when he saw the rescuers. Both men suffered frostbite on their feet, and Hahan was treated at the University of Utah Burn Center and released from the hospital late Sunday. "And I'm like, 'I want to be at my daughters wedding. I want to be, you know, I want to be there for my kids'," Black said. "All those kinds of things, and so I want to have the will to live, and not just like, 'Well I'm really cold, I'm going to sleep, I'm done." Wasatch County chief deputy Jared Rigby praised the men for their quick action upon realizing their situation, saying they had cell phones with them and promptly alerted family members, who were able to notify authorities. He also cautioned that those embarking on future such trips should take care to prepare for these potential scenarios. "Having enough cold weather gear to make it through the night in case snowmobiles go down — that's a lesson learned for them, I'm sure," he said. "Also having food and water that can get you through an extended period of time in case some kind of inclement weather comes in or some other kind of mishap." Contributing: Dan Jessop CONTINUED FROM FRONT temporarily suspend the search until 7 a.m. so the teams could refuel and coordinate plans. Summit County SAR and Utah State Parks assisted with the search as it resumed Sunday morning, deploying to Nobletts, Lake Creek, Strawberry River, and Co-op Creek trailheads. The subjects were located at about 10:45 a.m., reportedly cold but in good health. SAR members brought them off the mountain and to Wasatch County EMS, and the men are now with their families.
