Show AROUND THE COUNTY SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A8 JULY 15, 2011 10th Annual Echo Triathlon BY CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor The 10th Annual Echo Triathlon and site of the 2011 Rocky Mountain USA Triathlon (USAT) Region Championship event was held last Saturday at South Beach, Echo Reservoir. Over 500 competitors came headto-head with swimmers, cyclers, and runners, the best and toughest in this type of competition. Wearing wetsuits, at least the majority of the swimmers, they lined up at South Beach, anticipating about the normal temperatures of Echo Reservoir's to be 70F, but lucky to have it at about 63F! The competitors still raved that it was "...lots warmer than at Willard Bay. where we had to side stroke because it took our breath away at the 50F temperatures there the week before last." The Olympic competition athletes lined up first, with their 750 meter diamondshaped pattern north from the beach swim, going around twice (only around once for the Sprint group). Volunteers in the canoes and boats and around the meeting areas were members of the North Summit Drum Line and lifeguards. These teens were helpful in various areas, including removing the timing anklet and handing out the bags of take-home items as well as after-the-race recovery snacks for the athletes.
