It just wasn't doing its dang dish duty. The glasses weren't just streaked, they were cloudy and the cups and bowls had little bits of sand in them. We had a maintenance guy from the appliance place come by to check it out. He ran his diagnostics, checked the working parts and cleaned out the gunk that was lodged in the holes of the sprayers. "I think you may have just had some blockages in the washer arms. Everything else looks fine." Over the next few weeks I tried to convince myself that the dishes looked cleaner, that the glasses were less foggy, that there wasn't sand in the bottom of the cups. The boys said they didn't notice a different; the dishes were still the same. "No, they're not as bad," I said as I grabbed a class from the cupboard, rinsed the grime from the inside and got a drink of water. I finally acknowledged there was a problem when Devin he pulled a glass from the cupboard, looked in the bottom, rolled his eyes and said: "Man! We have GOT to get a new dishwasher! It is so embarrassing when I have friends over and they want a drink of water or we have a bowl of cereal. I don't know what they might find in the glass or stuck to the bottom of the bowl." "He's right, mom. They're disgusting!" Tyler chimed in. "We have to clean the 'clean dishes to use them." I had to agree. I realized that we had all gotten in the habit of checking the bottom of the glass before we got a drink; wiping out the bowl before we poured in the cereal and peering into the cup before we poured the coffee. A brand-spanking new dishwasher arrived on our doorstep in less than a week. Kraig and the boys removed the old one, connected the hoses and wires and slid the shiny new dishwasher in its place. The user's guide indicated that, prior to putting them in the dishwasher, you should rinse the dishes to remove the big chunks of food, but to not scrub the dishes or pre-wash them. Sounded fine by me. We had been used to washing them before we put them in and after we took them out. We put in a load of slightly-rinsed cloudy glasses, streaked plates and sandy-bottomed bowls, filled the soap container and selected the cycle. (There were more options than on the washer in the laundry room.) When I pushed "start," there was no loud buzzing or clunking; it didn't sound like a bathtub filling. There was a slight hum and if you listened closely you could hear the water running. That was it. We didn't even have to turn up the TV while the dishwasher was running! I felt like a kid on Christmas morning when I opened the dishwasher after it completed the run. The glasses were beautiful; crystal clear. When I pulled one out and held it up, it sparkled like they do on the dish soap commercials. "Look at that!" one of the boys said. "You can actually see through it!" "And there's no sand or gunk in the bowls," said the other. I was so excited I could hardly stand it. My dishes were clean. Really clean. It was like an epiphany. I hadn't realized just how icky the dishes had been. It was a wonder none of us had been sick from some dreaded dirty dish disease. I unloaded the dishwasher and then went on a quest for dirty dishes. I washed all the dishes in the cupboard - big plates, little plates, cups and glasses. Wine glasses that went in looking cloudy, came out sparkling. I put in all the silverware - knives, forks spoons. They went in dull and lack-luster and came out shiny and like-new. However, I didn't realize how busy getting a new dishwasher could make a person. I put in the glass light fixtures. They went in looking as if they were opaque or smoked glass and they came out crystal clear. While the dishes were washing, I wiped down the cabinets. While the silverware was in the dishwasher, I wiped out the drawers where I must have had a half a loaf of bread in crumbs. I pulled the too-old leftovers from the fridge so I could wash the containers. In doing so, I realized just how dirty my fridge was, so I wiped it out. There were things growing in the hydrator that I didn't even recognize. By the time the third load was finished, I had wiped out the kitchen cupboards, cleaned out the fridge and removed the breadcrumbs and other particles from my silverware drawers. The light fixtures in all the rooms glistened and most of my flower vases looked like new. And all my dishes were clean! My boys are no longer embarrassed to offer a friend a drink. Kraig doesn't have to check the bottom of his cup before he pours his coffee. And I don't spend near as much time scraping dishes and making sure they're fairly clean before they're loaded in the dishwasher. While I never imagined saying it, it's amazing the joy a new dishwasher can bring! Subscribe To The Summit County News 783-1471 Elder Dallin William Go Classifieds!
