Thanks to both participants and volunteers. It was a great Parade - and plans are already in the making and creating for next year's entrances! The Quilt 111111.1111P 14}11 EXCERPT FROM JO GARVER www.joslibraryquilt.com/the-quilt Jo's Library Quilt is unique for many reasons! It has 50 signatures of prominent GENEROUS best-selling authors. And after many, many months of volunteer hours THE QUILT, measuring approximately 72x88, is COMPLETE. It became the gorgeous masterpiece we all anticipated in the beginning created from the hand-picked fabric "stash" donated by the local, volunteer quilters! You may want to cuddle up under it and read your favorite book (perhaps one from THE BOOK COLLECTION!) When I decided to do a fundraiser for the library, I needed to find some volunteers to help make the quilt because I know absolutely nothing about making a quilt; I just wanted to raise some money for the library! So I told my story to our Librarian, Yvonne Judd. What a surprise to me when Yvonne said she was an avid quilter! She was excited and thrilled with the fund raising idea. And then a couple of days later she told me about a quilt she wanted to make. She had seen a picture of a library book quilt and had always told herself that one day she would make her own version of the pattern to hang in our library. Unfortunately, there is NO SPACE in our library to hang the quilt! A couple of days later and to my surprise, Yvonne "whipped out" the picture of the quilt we had discussed. Needless to say I began to cry, which is a standard routine in my new lifestyle. But they are "happy" tears! I couldn't believe my eyes! The decision was made for the creation & assembly of Jo's Library Quilt! Yvonne is a member of a local quilt guild in Coalville and she suggested I make a presentation to the guild to solicit additional volunteers to help "stitch" the quilt. Just two days after the presentation, I received a "special" phone call from one of my favorite authors, Fern Michaels. She had received my "quilt square" package and needed "instructions" on how & where to sign the square. Hence, the "template" was created! Thanks to Fern Michaels, I can be assured that each and every author signs their signature where it needs to be on the quilt square to fit within the spines of the books on Jo's Library Quilt! Dogs and Handlers from as far away as Canada are coming to compete against the Utah Range Ewes. The contest will showcase top dogs and handlers in a contest to navigate a small group of sheep around a course of panels and tasks. The Border Collie must run out 300 yards and pick up a group of five sheep, then quietly and confidently take them back to the handler. For the next task the dog will drive the sheep away from the handler and thru panels then across the field to more panels and back to the handler. The dog and the handler work as a team to separate and hold two sheep away from the group. Finally, the dog must pen the sheep. This is the second year for the Wild n Woolie Sheepdog trial. Because the trial was such a success last year, the number of entries has doubled this year, with handlers coming from as far away as Canada and North Dakota. Spectators will be able to see some top handlers and their dogs competing for points and money. Wild n Woolie Sheepdog trial Coordinators provide the tough Utah range ewe, the ultimate test for the Border Collie and handler. Range ewes typically run in groups of thousands and are not used being moved is small groups by a dog. Therefore, they sometimes do not want to cooperate. It is a true test of the Border Collies quiet power to complete the test. Sometimes it is a test of the Border Collies patience also, the dog can only grip if a sheep is charging at it or be disqualified. Sheepdog trailing is an International Sport with more and more trials starting up all over the Country. The trial is sanctioned by the United States Border Collie Handlers Association (USBCHA), teams will be competing for points as well as money. Every September the top handlers compete in a National Contest. This year the National Contest will be held in Carbondale Colorado. The competition gets tougher every year. It isn't just a sport for Shepherds and ranchers any- more. Many handlers are professional people who enjoy competing with their dogs. Everyone who has a dog will enjoy watching what a dog can do. Event coordinators are looking for volunteers to help at the trial. If interested in volunteering call Loreli Judd at (435) 640-1082 Events will be held Thursday thru Saturday, Aug. 4-6, starting at 7:30 a.m. till around 5 p.m. Open classes will be held Thursday and Saturday.
