Show OPINION JULY 15, 2011 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A2 Just a Thought LOCAL NEWS NOTES BY CHERYL OVARD NS Football Registration NS Football Registration will be Tuesday, July 26, from 3 p.m.-5 p.m., at the Football Field. Rewards - Awards Have you ever told your children, "if you do this you can have a treat!"? That is offering them a reward. Are rewards the only way to get some children to do something, to put their iTouch down, clean their room, or help set the table? Sometimes a reward "is" necessary - and is welcomed. For example, rewards for a job well done are incentives to others to do the same. A trophy for the best performance, or winning the "spelling bee" encourages all ages to do a little better "if" they do not receive this reward! It is also gratifying to those recipients who can "show off" their rewards or awards to others. Perhaps a reward could also be a "pat on the back" or a "hug". These rewards are also gratifying, but are also the type of reward that is all that is necessary to give - and can be not only beneficial - but remembered. Friendships are rewarded by hugs, compliments, or even just a smile. Rewards are not only necessary in "hug form" for children, but for adults, too. The touch of the hands when something good is shown or made - or a wink or a nod of the head. Whatever the rewards, remember one thing. They must be awarded for a genuine and honest endeavor, and given with a comment or timely smile so that the recipient can tell why they received the reward - Keep a small bag of treats handy, or a jar of rewards in your own home...jot down your idea of a physical reward or award and then...use them often. Rewards go along with keeping peace - as they are only given for something good and then the good is passed on! Recycling Tip For The Week... things to look for when trying to find an eco-friendly ice cream vendor: The use of re-usable utensils and containers. Metal spoons, ceramic bowls and cups are cheap and easy to come by and make a world of difference when it comes to freeing up landfill space. Ice cream in cones is both delicious and eco-friendly. Cones are perhaps the most green ice cream container around, especially if they are made in house. Look for stores that make their own sugar and waffle cones.
