Riding on the hay wagon, they waved and smiled as they greeted the crowds and children while their wagon went down and then returned on Henefer's Main Street. That is their nature - the two of them - and was for years! The two "...enjoyed visiting during the ride - reminiscing the times when they were each Mayors of Henefer." stated Butler. "I just can't believe that he is gone!" Larry Dearden, a Summit County resident his entire life, passed away on July 7th, 2011. Larry was Mayor of Henefer two terms, from 1966-1970 and then again 1996-2002. He and his wife, Kay, resided in Henefer, and raised four sons, Karey (Lori), Kraig (Kim), Kris (Susan), and Kyle (Stacie) there. Mayor Lew Marchant was present to greet the visitors who enjoyed the wagon rides, band melodies and photographs of days gone by! Steven Jones of Kamas, Dennis Jorgenson formerly of Peoa, now residing in Utah County, enjoyed the evenings' entertainment. Sonny Nordahl's Beaver Creek Inn, now known as The Notch used to play every Friday and Saturday nights brought in large crowds. "These guys can play anything!" The City of Kamas celebrated their centennial of being an incorporated entity. Back on July 5, 1911, the Summit County Commissioners voted to approve the incorporation of the town of Kamas. It has been said that Kamas derived its name from the Mootka Indian word "chamas" which designates a small grassy plain among the hills. In 1858, Thomas Rhoades was sent by Brigham Young to settle in the valley. More pioneers came in 1861 after learning that Rhoades found gold in the Uinta Mountains. In 1861, a sawmill was built in Beaver Creek Canyon. Easy access to the mountains made this all possible. This early timbering led to many more lumber operations in the valley's history. The first mercantile establishment was a co-op store located in one of the forts. In 1887, a dance hall was built where silent movies were shown. It later burned down in 1943. The valley's earliest telephone service consisted of one telephone in the home of a citizen that everybody used. If you would like a more historical perspective on the City of Kamas, you can go by city hall and purchase a Kamas History Book for $12. A big "thank you" goes out to Diane Atkinson, Jackie Blazzard, Beverly Bemis, and Kathy Gordan for putting these books together and organizing the entire celebration. As their pamphlets say "A jewel nestled in a valley surrounded by the beautiful Uinta Mountains." Special thanks to Monique Ovard, SCN Office Manager as well as the Kamas Centennial 1911-2011.
