Sculpture: Dragon Mailbox Mild Steel Artist: Zafod Beatlebrox $8,000 The Dragon Mailbox is a nine-foot-tall dragon holding a pentagon-shaped mailbox whose handle is a life size human hand. The artist created the dragon in response to a vandalism incident in Park Meadows when mailboxes were smashed. The sculpture counts on the ability of the dragon's fierce power to protect the sanctity of the mail, yet the life-size steel hand reaches out in friendliness to shake the hand of users. This sculpture was on the corner of Heber and Main Street in front of the Kimball Art Center for five years before the 2002 Olympics. Zafod Beatlebrox has lived in Summit County for 25 years. As early as high school, he began making things from any image his mind could imagine. A science major and lifelong fascination with mechanical things have had a major influence on his work — it is usually functional art. Zafod has exhibited at the Kimball Art Center several times, winning first place in the Windows, Chairs and Doors competition for his functional "Throne" made of stainless steel, copper and flushable porcelain.
