It is also the time to remind everyone to keep themselves safe while participating in outdoor activities. Thanks to a small grant from the Summit County Health Department, North Summit EMS will be providing helmets to local kids who don't have them. "In recent months we have noticed children around town without a helmet and we want to get the children wearing them," said Michelle Anderson, North Summit EMS Division Supervisor. "It is a great time to remind all bike riders and skateboarders that the first and most important step is wearing a helmet and wearing it correctly," said Amanda Webb, Summit County Health Department Health Educator. "Wearing a helmet is the Full Service Family Medicine Clinics Optometry Services Hearing Aids/Hearing Testing • Cardiology Services single most effective thing a person can do to avoid injury and death. It can reduce head and brain injuries up to 85%." The Summit County Health Department offers the following tips for fitting and adjusting your helmet for best use and protection. • Always wear a helmet when you ride a bike or skateboard. • Be sure your helmet is safety approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). • Your helmet should fit snugly. • Your helmet should rest low and level on your forehead, just above your eye- Kyler and Kaden Jacobson and Dillon and Tielor Richins brows. When you open your mouth to yawn, you should feel pressure on the top of your head. • Always fasten the strap. The strap should form a "V" below your ears. • You should only be able to fit two fingers from your eyebrow to the brim of the helmet and one finger under the chin strap. • Adults should always set a good example for children by wearing a helmet. There are several different helmets out there and it is im- portant to use the helmet that is designed for that specific sport.
