Graduation Tapestry President Andee Neff conducting Doc Woolstenhulme and Wyoma Porath retirees Park City School District honored by Governor Gary Herbert Governor Gary Herbert honored Park City School District for its energy efficiency awareness and efforts on May 10 in the State Capitol's Gold Room. Board President Moe Hickey, Superintendent Ray Timothy, and Director of Support Services Stephen Oliver were present to receive the Excellence in Energy Star Promotion Award on behalf of the school district. In addition to hosting the first comprehensive high school in the State to achieve LEED certification, Park City School District has undertaken a number of energy saving measures. In conjunction with the State Office of Energy Development, McPolin and Jeremy Ranch Elementary Schools have undergone "building tune-ups" in which heating, cooling and electrical consumption were adjusted to achieve optimal efficiency. The three projects are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 633,000 pounds and save the District close to $21,000 per year. "We have made substantial progress," said Steve Oliver. "But, there is still a lot that can be done and that we are working on." The District received the award for participating in the Utah Building Energy Efficiency Strategies (UBEES). UBEES is a public-private initiative designed to increase energy efficiency, high performance building strategies, and on-site renewable energy in state and local government, commercial, and residential buildings. Tributes for two retiring teachers After serving a combined total of 75 years teaching students at South Summit it was only fitting that Doc (Darwin Woolstenhulme) and Wyoma Hortin-Porath be properly honored (roasted) at a staff steak fry on their last day of school. While Doc cooked delicious steak and chicken for the staff, Jodi Snelgrove presented marvelous tributes to both teachers. The tributes consisted of "Hortin Hatches a Nest Egg", an adaptation of "Hortin Hatches the Egg" and "Doc and the Seven Snow Whites". Everyone laughed and cried and remembered good times sprinkled with math and education humor. The tributes ended with a musical presentation of the John Denver song about friends by Jodi Snelgrove, Darlene Clegg, Dave Carter, and Brad Flinders. Doc has taught three generation of students beginning in 1966 and would have made it four had he stayed just a few more years. Wyoma has taught for 30 years beginning in 1980 and cov- ered two generations of students. They were lavished with parting gifts and gratitude and will be sorely missed by all who worked with them. Thank you for your service. Subscribe To The Summit County News 783-1471 |
