Show SENIOR & HEALTH NEWS SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS 16, 2010 JULY Summit County Health Dept. PAGE North Summit Safety experts remind parents: No children under 16 on ATVs Senior Citizens BY LOUISE WALLACE While ATVs, whether for recreation or an occupation, are part of daily life for many across the United States – Safe Kids Summit County recommends that children under the age of 16 should never ride on or operate ATVs of any size – including youthsized ATVs. "ATVs are inherently difficult to operate, and children do not have the cognitive and physical abilities to drive or ride these vehicles safely," said Geri Essen, coordinator of Safe Kids Summit County. "If you're not old enough to drive a car with safety belts and traffic control devices on a paved road, you're certainly not old enough to drive a powerful open-seat vehicle at speeds up to 70 miles per hour over rough terrain." Nationwide, approximately 130 children under the age of 16 die each year as a result of ATV-related injuries, and an estimated 40,000 children under the age of 16 are seriously injured each year in ATV-related incidents. While a helmet can reduce the risk of severe head injuries, there are no safety devices that adequately protect against other injuries commonly sustained while riding ATVs. The number of ATV-related injuries per year more than doubled between 1993 and 2006. In 2007, children accounted for one out of four ATV-related injuries. Beginning in 1998, the ATV industry observed voluntary guidelines restricting the sale of adult-sized ATVs (with engines bigger than 90 cc) for use by children under age 16, but compliance testing from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) showed numerous instances of noncompliance with the voluntary standard. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, signed into law in 2008, made the voluntary standard mandatory as of April 2009. The new law prohibits companies from recommending, marketing, or selling new adult-sized ATVs for use by persons under the age of 16. The law uses maximum speed, rather than engine size, for determining the ageappropriateness of ATVs and requires that new ATVs include labels and hangtags with certain safety information, including age recommendations. However, the law still permits the manufacture of youth-sized ATVs, which pose inherent safety risks. "Previous efforts to make ATVs safer for kids have proved inadequate and have not kept children out of the emergency room," said Essen. "Children can be seriously injured even on ATVs manufactured and marketed for kids." Rollovers, collisions and ejections involving ATVs can cause instantly fatal head injuries as well as serious nonfatal injuries to the head, spinal cord and abdomen. A child riding an ATV is four times more likely to be seriously injured than a rider over the age of 16. "We know it's not the advice a lot of parents want to hear, especially if ATVs are commonly used by friends and family, but it's the conclusion we've drawn from extensive and ongoing review of the data," said Essen. "If you want our opinion as safety experts, there is simply no way to make ATV riding a safe activity for children." Safe Kids Summit County works to prevent unintentional childhood injury, the leading cause of death and disability to children ages 1 to 14. Subscribe To The Summit County News! Hope you all had a nice Fourth of July and also enjoyed the antique car show held on Main Street last Saturday. From the amount of the crowds I bet most of the city people attended. We were happy to see Marilyn and Ronald Green arrive. Was beginning to think they weren't going to come to Coalville this summer. They spend most of their time in Quartzite, AZ, where Marilyn spends some of her time making those neat little card holders that so many of us need. We not only wanted to see them but we did want to get more of those holders. They do help our aching fingers and you all know that we do like to play cards. The high light of our week was our trip to the Lavender Farm on Thursday. We are happy that Lita and Wes Fisher and Marilyn and Ron Green were able to go with US. We traveled on a nice bus and had 27 plus the driver and I'm quite certain everyone had a good time. We ate lunch at the Chuck-O-Rama in Provo before going on to the farm in Mona. The lavender field was in bloom and it was so colorful but that wasn't all. They have many different kinds of flowers and herbs and we could wander through the gardens 336-5501 II Dr. DuaneE.Townsend,M.D. Gynecologist Alternative & Traditional Integrated Medicine 435-90 1-8 12 3 112 Ryan's Lane, Midway "YOU DO HAVE A CHOICE!' The county activity to the Pickleville Playhouse is this Saturday, July 17. The bus will leave Coalville center at 2 p.m. I know your looking forward to the show so please, don't be late. So the tradition continues and Senior Day is Friday, Aug. 13. The lunch is free and will be served at 12 noon with entertainment to follow. Transportation buses (like we had last year) will leave the center starting at 11 a.m. We must register by July 31st. if we wish to have lunch. You can do it at the center or call Vaunade Swenson at 3363042, 615-3042 or 783-4351 ext 3042. Please include your mailing address when registering; a lunch ticket will be mailed to you. That, I had not expected at all – now we won't have to visit the Hogle Zoo this summer. Our class conducted by a nice lady named Ranae was about the Therapeutic uses of oils and that was really an eye opener to me. These are pure oils we are talking about and it is amazing to find out how much good one can get from just one drop of oil when used properly of course. The oils are expensive but when one finds out how much work and time is spent to extract the oils it makes sense that they have to charge what they do. Remember you don't have to use a lot when only a drop or two will serve the purpose. It takes three quarters of an acre of lavender to produce form 2 to 4 gallons of oil. Other herbs are about the same and then there is the Golden Rod. It takes three quarters of and acre to produce about 4 ounces. That's one, I don't think we want to have to use. Each one of us got seven different drops of oil during Ranae's lecture. That was so we could get the feel, smell the scent and learn what each drop was best for. Just wish, I could remember all those things. The peppermint oil works wonders with sinuses, win- Go Classifieds!
