The Soaring Wings Parent Teacher Student Organization is a volunteer parent, teacher and student organization that supports the Soaring Wings Montessori School. SWPTSO sponsors the annual Park City Children's Fair as well as other social and civic community projects enabling the students at Soaring Wings Montessori School to become involved in community projects such as the Fair, Fall Food Drive, and Angel Tree Projects. The idea began in 1988 when the students first thought of holding a garage sale and sending the proceeds to hungry children in Africa. They collected their outgrown books and toys and sent the resulting $25 to Plan International (then known as Childreach). In 1994 the annual garage sale grew into the Park City Children's Fair with parents, teachers and students offering fun and games with resulting proceeds going toward clean water and medicine for a young girl in Senegal through PI. Over the years students have selected a group of organizations, now known collectively as the Children's Planet Fund, for their work in promoting a better world for the children. The Children's Planet Fund, includes Recycle Utah, Park City Library, Summit County Library, Adopt-a-Native Elder, and 5 sponsored children in Honduras, Paraguay, China, Sri Lanka, Mali and Niger through Plan International. The students exchange letters and photos with the children extending their geography studies around the globe. Most importantly student participation in SWPTSO projects teach them how they can make a difference in their world. Although there is much organization by teachers and parents the students are involved in designing and distributing posters, selling tickets and working the booths on Fair day. Once the proceeds are tallied the stu- dents decide on a donation budget. They review the organizations they have supported over the years, consider how each group uses the money and then present their budget to the SWPTSO for approval. The project continues through the coming school year with the presentation of donation checks to each organization concluding just in time to start planning the following year's fair. Teachers Lina Singleton and Alyssa Fought are this year's Fair Chairs. Of the coming Fair, Lina remarked, "The Fair brings our community together. Every student, teacher and parent helps in some way. We've kept it small and child-oriented over the years so children of all ages can come and enjoy the fun."
