Show SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS MAY 21, 2010 From the Kamas Lions Conservation Corner RCS Dear Fellow Lions: We decided during our April meeting to reduce our formal meetings to once a month. This was in hopes of increasing attendance. We had four members at our last meeting. I understand that we all face challenging schedules with family and business commitments. However, the club becomes paralyzed to conduct business if we are unable to have a quorum present. Please mark off the second Thursday of each month so that we can have a proper meeting. Below is a document that forms a narrative for our 501 c(3) application. Please review it and let me know what I may have forgotten. See you on June 10, 2010. Please try to bring your list of volunteers for July 1,2,3 and 5 6-10pm at the Oakley Rodeo. Thanks, Lion Jason The purposes of this club shall be: (a) To create and foster a spirit of understanding Fencing: A tool for conservation Why do fences make good neighbors? This old saying is correct in more ways than one. Good fences do more than just keep Mr. Jones's milk cow out of Mrs. Smith's prize roses. A good fence can be a key tool for the conservation of natural resources. Fencing, along with water development is an integral component of a grazing system that will improve or enhance plant condition, productivity, health and vigor. These practices are called facilitating conservation practices because they help assist or facilitate a change in management. It is management that influences changes in plant productivity through controlling the timing, duration, and frequency of livestock grazing. Fences are merely a tool that enables the land manager to practice grazing management. However, it is a common error to think that fencing or water development themselves will grow more grass. It may take as little as one growing season or as long as several to see a significant change in plant productivity. The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides assistance to land managers by providing technical and financial assistance in building fences that facilitate grazing management. Fences are designed to lessen impacts to wildlife. For instance, fences built in areas frequented by antelope are designed with a barbless bottom wire that is at least 16 inches above the ground. The NRCS can provide fence designs and funding through several conservation programs in building standard barbed wire, woven wire, suspension, let-down, and permanent electric fences to fit the needs and requirements of the animals being managed. Contact the conservation planners in Coalville, Utah at (435) 336-5853 for more information about how a good fence makes for good conservation.
