CHERYL OVARD SCN Editor Saturday, May 15, the youth who participated in the Wasatch Back StudentArt show were given one free skate admission voucher to have a chance to skate with the Pros! Sports stars Lauren Cholewinski and Ryan Bedford, who attended the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, were both in the foyer visiting with the kids as well as out on the ice trying out their new skating equipment themselves. Lauren is from York, SC, but resides in Murray, Utah at this time training there, and she is a World Champion US Speedskater in sprint overall. in 2010 she won gold in the 500m. Ryan skates long track, and said that at times they get up to 37 mph around the track (short track goes up to about 30 mph). He was trying out he new blades, specifically made to his design for more speed and control on turns. The youth enjoyed getting their autographed post card from each in the foyer! Also skating in the arena were members of the Park City Pioneers Hockey Team. The session was open to the public, and all ages of youth and their parents enjoyed "rubbing shoulders" with these skating athletes! (Their artwork for the Wasatch Back Student Art Show is on exhibit until the 28th of May at Kimball Art Center's galleries.) County Officer graduates from FBI National Academy Program Captain Andrew Leatham Two hundred fifty-three law enforcement officers graduated March 19 from the FBI National Academy Program at Quantico, VA. The 240th Session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 50 states. Included were members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Columbia, 20 International countries, four military organizations, and four Federal civilian organizations. Captain Andrew Leatham of the Summit County Sheriff's Office had the honor of attending this program, and his name will be added to the 4 others from Summit County who have completed and graduated earlier from this same program. The program is internationally known for training men and women with ten weeks of advanced investigative, management and fitness and the officers attending have to have a record of professionalism within their agencies. On average, these officers have 19 years of service with law enforcement. Upon returning from the training program they earn the opportunity to serve in executive-level positions. FBI Director, Robert Mueller, was the principal speaker at the graduating ceremony. He along with the FBI Academy instructional staff, are Special Agents, and many hold advanced degrees and are recognized both nationally and internationally in their fields of expertise. Since 1972, National Acad- emy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia due to the accreditation by the University of the many courses offered. The graduating officers were represented by the class spokesperson, David Moore, Chief Inspector with the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Belfast, United Kingdom. A total of 43,483 graduates now represent the FBI National Academy since it began in July of 1935. Of this number, 25,971 are still active in law enforcement work. The following Summit County Sheriff's Office Deputies are National Academy graduates: Sheriff Dave Edmund; Undersheriff Dean Carr; Deputy Milan Buhler; and Reserve Deputy Mike Wilkinson. The office has 5 now in total and all have had none prior to Sheriff Edmunds as the Summit County Sheriff. Congratulations to Captain Leatham on his new accomplishments! Park City Parks, streets and surrounding areas, Oakley streets and surrounding areas, could be seen dotted with people wearing the protective vests of orange and gold, and dragging the huge garbage bags which got heavier as the morning sun rose higher. The efforts of everyone were evident by the afternoon, and those who volunteered to help were treated to goodies, as well as in the PC City Park at 8:30 am a continental breakfast was served. Hidden treasurer, prizes and awards were also rewards for those who helped. The communities each committed to reaching their goals of beautifying the cities, as well as many sponsors got into the act and their work was very much appreciated!
