Show SENIOR & HEALTH NEWS MAY 7, 2010 PAGE A7 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Summit County Health Dept. North Summit Youth sports safety Senior Citizens BY LOUISE WALLACE she has already put forth. We This week was a nice one and a busy one too. The trip to Provo to tour the NuSkin Enterprises on Tuesday was not only a great day weather wise but an interesting one also. Guess, we are never to old to learn something we didn't know about before. Kathy Wilde took our vital signs on Wednesday and Kathy Mumma made ten pairs of feet, happy ones. Kathy will be back in June but we don't have the exact date yet. If all goes well, it should be on June 23. We held our board meeting on Friday. The band held a practice session. Plans for the band are being made so they can accept some of the invitations to entertain at other places than our Center. Then, of course, they would like to visit some of the care centers where a few of our friends are living. Louise Judd is in charge of May and we thank her for advance for the time and effort will be going to the Retired and Senior Volunteer 2010 Recognition event this Tuesday. Our special turkey dinner to celebrate Mother's Day will be Wednesday, May 5. And the program for that day sounds like it will be a great one. Hope we have a good attendance. Mother's are special we know. Our day for shopping will be May 6. And we wish to remind you all that the High School Music program is at 7 p.m. on the 18th. Those students really go all out for the community and they always make us feel good for having been there. Do plan to attend. May 20, we will be visiting Dean Schulte's High Uinta's Taxidermy at 11 a.m. We will be able to see many examples of his outstanding work and he will tell us about his work and experiences. He has earned an award of excellence for the National Taxidermist Association. Then, we will have lunch at Denise's Home Full Service Family Medicine Clinics Plate. Those planning to join please sign up and pay at Seniors by May 14. The cost to you is $3 and the club will pick up the balance. We may be going to have lunch at the Park City Senior Center on the 14th. And if we do the band will entertain after lunch. Rose Maxwell has consented to cook for us there as well as right here at home. We will end the month of May with Kathy Wilde's health check on the 26th. And board meeting on the 28th. Life is worth living and we can make it most interesting if: we make promises sparingly, and by keeping them faithfully. If we keep the corners of our mouths turned up. In conversations, do it with an open mind, discuss rather than argue. If we keep skid chains on our tongues and say what we want briefly. If we realize that the worst eye trouble is "I" trouble. Note: A cheerful "hello" is often the best thing to cast off a tearful woe. Have a great week and we will meet again soon. "More than 30 million children participate in sports each year in the United States. Of those 30 million, approximately 3.5 million children under the age of 14 are treated for sports-related injuries in hospitals, clinics and emergency rooms" says Geri Essen Safe Kids Summit County Coalition coordinator. The rate and severity of sports-related injury increases with a child's age. Approximately 2 out of 5 traumatic brain injuries among children are associated with participation in sports and recreational activities. This new initiative focuses on four components critical to keeping young athletes healthy and injury-free: preventing acute and overuse injuries, proper hydration before, during and after play, annual pre-season medical screenings for each athlete and finally, concussion awareness, prevention and screening methods. Sports Medicine coaches, parents and league organizers can use to prevent sports-related injuries: • Pre-Season Medical Screening: Every child should receive an annual pre-participation physical evaluation (PPE). These exams may prevent or treat any underlying conditions the young athlete may have. • Safety gear: To prevent acute injuries, children playing sports should have access to and consistently use wellmaintained safety equipment during both practices and games. • Qualified coaching: Athletic coaches should be trained in both first aid and CPR, have a plan for responding to emergencies and have current knowledge of both safety rules and proper equipment use. Sports programs with certified Athletic Trainers on staff are ideal because they are trained to prevent or provide immediate care for athletic injuries. • Proper Conditioning: To prevent acute and overuse injuries, coaches should teach young athletes proper routines for both warm-ups and cool-downs before and after practice and play.
