Show N.S. SCHOOL NEWS APRIL 2, 2010 PAGE B3 SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS Sweetheart Week State Convention FFA REPORTER: ZAINA DEWEESE March 22-26 was when North Summit FFA held their Sweetheart Week. This year North Summit switched it up a little and had an FFA Hero's pageant and the auction. Both were held in the school auditorium at 6 p.m. During the week the Pageant contestants had activities that would add to their final score of the pageant. On Monday the contestants took an FFA knowledge test to see how much they really knew about the FFA Organization. Tuesday, they came in at lunch to decorate their hero's t- shirt, which were judged on Wednesday by other FFA members. Thursday was our final lunch activity so we ended it with the hero's obstacle course. They started off by pushing their penny across the floor with their nose! After spinning 5 times on the bat they army crawled their way to the finish line. Friday was our big Hero's Pageant and Auction. We started the night with the contestant's talent, followed by their modeling and on-stage questions. Next we had our traditional auction. Each contestant made a cake or basket related to our hero's theme and auction it off to the public. We reached our goal and exceeded it by 50%. We'd like to thank the public and sponsors for supporting the North Summit FFA. Last but not least, we awarded our FFA Hero's Pageant winners. Our second attendants were Kashlie Roath and Colten Joiner. Our first attendants were Zaina DeWeese and Ethan Young. And Our Mr. and Ms. Sweetheart were Wade Donaldson and Cassidy Stephens! Congratulations to not only our winners but also all of our contestants! Again we'd like to thank everyone who supports the FFA and everyone who made this week possible! At 8:45 a.m. the bus pulled out to leave for State Convention, but on the long drive to Cedar City we stopped and toured a few places. Our first stop was Sweets Candy Factory, where we got to learn about the process of making some of our favorite treats; Such as Orange Sticks, Raspberry Sticks, and everyone's favorite Saltwater Taffy. Out next stop was Cabela's where we received a tour of the store and grabbed a bite to eat. Our last stop was Deseret Meats Industry. We were able to learn about the process of harvesting and packaging different types of meats. After a fun day of touring we were finally on our way to Cedar City for State Convention. State convention was a blast for all FFA members. Students where able to go sessions, hear our State Officers retiring addresses, and amazing key note speakers. They were also able to watch FFA members receive awards for their hard work and dedication to the FFA program. FFA members can compete in speaking contests at State Convention. Our own Bradie Jill Jones and Cassidy Black competed in the Creed Speaking contest, where they memorized the FFA Creed, presented it to judges, and answered a few questions about the creed. Both girls did a great job, Cassidy Black took 4th place and Bradie Jill Jones placed 2nd. Congratulations girls! Josh Ovard competed in the job interview contest, where he practiced and prepared for job interviews in the future. We'd like to thank Josh for representing North Summit FFA! At State convention, FFA members also get the chance to win different awards like the State Degree and Proficiency awards. To earn the State Degree they have to spend a certain amount of hours working on their SAE and being in FFA. When they receive the state degree they get to go to the State Degree Luncheon, where they recognize the recipients and provide them lunch and even talent. Wade Donaldson played the piano at the State Degree Luncheon. Cassidy Stephens, Dalton Ross, Josh Ovard, and Marty Wright received their State Degree this year and we would like to congratulate them! Ethan Young was the State Proficiency Award winner in Beef Production Placement. Ethan works at Ensign Ranches with beef production. He did a great job winning this award and representing North Summit at State Convention, great job Ethan! The final day at state convention was a fun one. We got to watch our State President, Amberly Snyder, give her retiring address and we found out who the State FFA Officers are for 2010-2011. We'd like to thank Shyanne Ovard for representing North Summit as a State Officer candidate. Our trip to State Convention was a great experience for our members and we'd like to thank everyone who made it possible for us to go!
