Show OPINION SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A2 Just a Thought Regional News Notes BY CHERYL OVARD SSHS hosts Sterling Scholar competition "Just a Thought" Thoughts pulled into one... Today's "Just a Thought" is a culmination of many... (thoughts, that is) and some are quotes from others, some just thoughts which just seem to jump onto the paper for no reason — only to find that there is a reason — for someone to think about and maybe comfort them. To have a friend you must be one" (Author unknown) ...and sometimes we are all he has! Put another way - you want to be a friend, and in turn the friend just wants to be one, too — funny how life really is at times! Friendships which last a lifetime are treasured — and marveled at when they go on over 50 years! I am proud to say I have such a friend — of 53 years...we still keep in touch. I also treasure the many other friends I have — and I am not keeping track of the years but appreciate each of them and their friendship! Everybody needs friends — who else can you talk to - ask a favor of in an emergency — remember when mother asked you to run to the neigh- bors and borrow a cup of sugar — and return it with the cup full of sugar and a loaf of bread to go with it as a thank you. There is a side to everyone which is good ...seeking somebody to trust and to be close to — and finding a person you can pour your heart out to and tell your innermost plans and goals to in life — is a treasure worth more than all the money in the world! When someone is sick, there are those whose compassion seems to surface immediately and all other thoughts are set aside until that person has been comforted — and sometimes that person seemed like very distant and perhaps hard to get to know. You never know how you can influence someone or make a difference in somebody's life while teaching — whether in a class or workshop situation... so always be prepared in what you do and do your best to understand what you are presenting. Take time to walk across a field of wildflowers, or maybe APRIL 2, 2010 just through the wheat fields ...see where your thoughts take you...and it doesn't matter how young or old — we all react to the beautiful surroundings around us —even as a child. While looking over the unknown fields in a photograph —the mind races and wonders...what is it that is out there...and where does it lead? It can be beautiful, if like the foreground, or perhaps weeds and thorns which catch and rip the leg of your pants. It depends on us — which path we choose to wander while going through these fields... Be careful to know someone before judging them, as getting to know a person only by words on a piece of paper cannot equal actually becoming their friend — and the true character surfaces quickly — they could one day become the friend we found along the path. Believing that you can make a difference is the first step to doing just that... Have you ever watched a kitty from the window — they "meow" and want your attention...and if you succumb to their wishes and go to them, they automatically snuggle to your legs, walking around them and rubbing their heads on your pant-legs, waiting for you to scratch behind their ears! Life is certainly interesting! We all need attention and love to be able to "finally get that scratching behind the ears"! "Give a man an inch and he becomes a ruler!" (Author unknown) — this is a thought that we laugh at — but at the same time, wishing hopefully the "ruler" becomes a good friend and uses the "inch" wisely. Last but not least...life is like a computer at times— it asks "do you want to accept this program", and then offers a box to check for the reply "to" accept it — then... after accepting it — we must install the program — and to make it work — we must use it! Wow kind of like life — right? Guess we should all "check the box". Recycling Tip For The Week... South Summit High School will be hosting this years Sterling Scholar Competition for our region.
