Weather was questionable, high winds were experienced throughout the Summit County area, and fires in Salt Lake brought clouds of smoke which when mixed with the dust and snow from the mountains caused the temperatures to drop and the visibility "not so good!" The Olympic Parade did go on, and a record crowd gathered at the top of Old Main Street in Park City, followed the vehicles and ended up at the Park City Town Lift - excited to visit with the "Athletes" who were showing off their gold, silver and bronze medals earned at the 2010 Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada. The trucks and trailers were pulled slowly so as not to upset the riders as they waved to the people all lined up and down the street in Park City. When the last of the vehicles passed, the crowds followed the parade to the bottom of the street for the signing tables set up there. People of all ages hovered over the many tables set up in the middle of area, eagerly awaiting a moment to be with their favorite "star" of the Olympics! Coats, hats, shirts, and souvenir photographs - they were signing everything in site. The music being played by the "School of Rock" performing band could be heard above the crowd, and the audience Jaret "Speedy" Peterson - Aerials - Silver Medal - loved it! Mayor Dana Williams, Park City's Mayor, led the parade in his vehicle. Along with other dignitaries and representatives from the Utah Athletic Foundation (Colin Hilton), Deer valley Resort's Bob Wheaton, Bill Malone, PC Chamber and Colin Hilton, of the Utah Athletic Foundation, along with Jenni Smith, PCMR and Mike Gear, The Canyons, followed the pack. "These are the finest people...I have been around for a long time," said Morrison, "and I cannot praise them enough...they are kind, caring, and all those things that make people good people - so when you go home tonight give them a big hug and be thankful that you have them (and students, do the same for your parents). ... to the plant, we are very grateful for all you have done for the community, and for these students - thank you!" Plant Representative Kenneth Stephens welcomed everyone and on behalf of Plant Manager Keith Krugh, who could not make it to the banquet, thanked all for corning. "Recognizing the importance of education," stated Stephens, "...we hope you remember how important it is. We commend these students and are pleased to honor you this night for your achievements in high school." He then introduced Superintendents of North Summit High School, Steven Carlsen and Morgan's Superintendent, Ronald Wolff. Superintendent Carlsen's remarks were directed to the students, "...you (students) and parents are what is 'right with education', and we want to congratulate you for being outstanding in your field." Superintendent Wolff commented that "this is a great honor for you students and for your parents and parents - you will feel the thrill and excitement when your stu- dents are called up (at the competition)! We congratulate you, students and ...never sell yourself short because you came from a small high school." The program, organized by Holcim's Kevin Ovard, was enjoyed by all. Following the dinner, Principals from each school presented a plaque and book entitled "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho as a token of remembrance of the evening on behalf of Holcim to each student. Closing comments were made by the High School Advisors from each school, North Summit's Counselor Lance Pace on behalf of Tony 011erton, General Manager of the "School of Rock, stated that youth and teens ages 10 through 17 from Park City Schools and Sandy Schools, can join the "School of Rock". They are students who may or may not enjoy other sports and activities, but as one dad stated "Conner is 14, (from Park City), does not like to play basketball or football, but enjoys music. He plays bass guitar in the band and loves it! " The students practice and take lessons at school, and the group was entertaining at the plaza at the "Town Lift" which hosted the parade and Olympic and Paralympic athletes. These athletes earned medals at Vancouver on Tuesday, March 30, and they were able to hear the School of Rock "Show Band".
