Show SUMMIT COUNTY NEWS PAGE A4 Youth Trapshooting Team FEBRUARY 26, 2010 4\Rcs Conservation Corner Proper pesticide use and storage BY THOMAS HOSKINS NRCS Rangeland Management Specialist Coalville Utah Field Office Do the words fumitoxin aluminum phosphide ring any bells? This pesticide has recently been getting coverage from local news stations. The incorrect application of this pesticide was responsible for the deaths of two young children last month. As always, tragedy begets awareness. Now is the time to consider your own use and storage of pesticides to preempt any other tragedies. One of the services that NRCS provides is technical assistance to farmers and ranchers and to ensure that any questions about pesticide use and storage get answered. Let's address some common questions and answers about pesticide use. Some of the youth on the Heber Valley Trap & Skeet Club's 2009 SCTP Team pictured at the Q. Are all pesticides bad? Alfalfa crops suffer damage from alfalfa weevils and diseases. Musk Thistle is a major threat to plant diversity and is prevalent on most ranches here in Summit county. Pesticides can help reduce the impacts of these problems. Q. Where can I find information about pesticides? A. There are many sources of information about pesticides that you can utilize. The first place one should check is the label that comes with your pesticides. The label is chock full of relevant information, and it should always be your first source. Another useful resource is your local Utah State University (USU) extension office. The USU extension has all the resources necessary to ensure that you are using your pesticides in a safe manner. Your local NRCS office also specializes in writing Integrated Pest Management Plans, which analyzes environmental impacts of pesticide use, storage, and other possible alternatives besides pesticides. Q. How can I safely store leftover pesticides? This question is harder to answer, because different pesticides have different storage requirements. However storage of pesticides should be carefully considered and we at the NRCS would like to help you find a safe solution to the problem. The NRCS and its partners frequently have meetings about proper pesticide use, and we invite and encourage all people who apply pesticides to attend. If you are unable to attend these classes feel free to call us about the safe use and storage of pesticides. Our mission at the NRCS is to help people help the land. Helping educate and develop plans to correctly use an integrated pest management approach helps us achieve our mission. The NRCS offers technical assistance to help with creating a plan for your farm or ranch. We can be reached in Coalville at (435) 336-5853 and Ogden at (801) 629-0580.
