I have been blessed to sit and talk with these people. Together they embodied the type of person I want to be, extra positive and giving. Some of the positivity from their examples has rubbed off on me." Lints describes a winner as not just "somebody who shows the best skill, balance, or determination; it is somebody who can grasp hold of all those things, then reach out and touch perfection, manifest in their sport." Fluidity on the ice is the perfection Lints seeks. His life has not been struggle free. As a preschooler Lints was diagnosed with a speech impediment. "I have searched my entire life to not stutter. I have found brief moments of fluidity of speech when I read out loud, in music when I sing and play the guitar, and in skiing I have found brief moments of satisfaction." Ice, Lints said, is where he has found his greatest teacher in his search for fluidity. "When I go out to skate on frozen water I feel connected to that fluid motion. The ice has taught me so much about myself. I feel like I am in God's hands sometimes. I feel good, I feel vibrant. That's me. That's why I skate." When Lints is on the ice he feels connected to others in a way he can only experience on the ice. "Communication with others has been my fear, I've had a hard time," he said. "The way I communicate with others is through the motions of my body when I am speed skating." Lints shows outstanding promise in his training. In one season he shaved 10 seconds off his personal record in the 400 meter flying lap, an uncommon achievement in speed skating. Last March he competed in the Americas Cup Speed Skating events, shattering four personal records in 500 meter, 1000 meter, and 1500 meter long style speed skating. Lints attributes his mother for teaching him two great lessons, how to train and to never give up. Due to the amount of time required to train at an Olympic level and the many expenses incurred while training, it is almost impossible for an athlete to find employment that pays enough to cover all costs and allows for the required training time as well. Lints said his current employment covers his monthly bills but there is no room left in his work and training schedule to seek side jobs. "It is customary for an athlete, at this point before making the US Team to submit information asking for financial assistance," he said. Financial support for a training athlete offers another way to participate in the Olympic experience. An Olympic athlete not only represents the US Team, but also his financial supporters who share in all his athletic endeavors. A resident of Kamas Lints was born in Payson. His family also lived in Kaysville, UT, spent three years in California, then moved to Park City. He received most of his education in the Park City School District. "They taught me ethics, manners, and how to treat others. The teachers were encouraging and gave me a step in the right direction," Lints said. With gratitude as generous as the support offered to him Lints said he appreciates The Shea family, Dr. Heiden, and the Kamas, Heber, and Park City communities for their generosity. Lints takes his job as an aspiring Olympic athlete seriously. "If I can inspire one person within the course of one day to go out and dream, then I have done my job for the day." he said.
