Were you a jock? Did you excel in the visual arts? Maybe your voice, or instrument, charmed the gods from time to time. Perhaps, your skill was in the academic field, and you competed in AD, debate, or FBLA. Or, were you involved in anything? In the fall of 2008 our very own South Summit High School Nurse, Sandy Galovich, wanted to help high school kids get involved and plan for their future careers. Because of her expertise in the medical field she focused on helping those inclined towards medical professions by starting up the Future Heath Professional’s club (FHP). She then recruited students and gave them jobs as President (Arthur Wilson), V.P. (Lee Leavitt), Senior Rep. (Tristan Fairborn), and Junior Rep. (Brittany Bodily). FHP’s goal is expand South Summit student’s knowledge about medical professions and help them to get started on the path to their future life. These goals are accomplished by visits from current medical profes- sionals, which include Shauna Bradley LCSW, Dr. Steven B. Sargent OD, Dr. John Hanrahan, Jed Frazier DC, Marci Mitchell - Med CCC-SLP, Byron Horner PT, Stephanie Hurt RN, and Lisa Dahl RN (Airmed Nurse). These visits help the high school students get a small look into the world of medicine and include a history of their schooling, as well as a description of their every day life in the medial field. FHP has just taken their last field trip of the year. They were lucky enough to get a tour of the U of U School of Medicine, parts of the U of U Hospital and Airmed facilities, and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. This was an excellent opportunity for the students to expand their horizons and develop a wider understanding of hospital life, and the schooling they face in the future. FHP is a wonderful club full of opportunities missed by many small school students. If you are a high school student and want, to be a medical professional, or you don’t know what you want and you think that the medical field is a possibility, try FHP, and get involved today.
