Subscribe To The Summit County News! 336-5501 by Jan Next Tuesday marks an historic event. On Jan. 20, 2009, Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America. He will be the first African American to take the Oath of the Office of President. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, brought about the abolishment of slavery in this county. On election night, when Senator Obama became President-elect Obama, he echoed the words of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address: “And government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from this earth.” Now, almost 150 years after Lincoln placed his hand on the bible and took the oath of office, Barack Obama will take that same oath. And it seems only fitting that he will be sworn in using that same bible. Obama will be the first president to be sworn in on that bible since Lincoln first used it all those years ago. One hundred fifty years ago only white male Americans could vote in this country. It has taken that long to break down the barriers of discrimination enough for a black man to run for, and be elected to, the highest office in the country. My children’s children will read about Obama’s election as a turning point in America’s history. They will have grown up in a world where “The President” hasn’t always been a white male. This Tuesday, when Barack Obama places his dark hand on the weathered cover of the Lincoln bible, he will take that solemn oath, not as a black man, but as an American. “I solemnly swear to faithfully uphold the office of President of the United States and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.” Hopefully, it won’t take another 150 years for our nation to truly become color blind. |
