Show Senior & HEALTH News AUGUST 1, 2008 PAGE A7 Summit County News North Summit Senior Citizens by Louise Wallace This article is not going to be about what happened at the Center but what happened to me personally. Read on and please forgive me for taking up this space. It all started on July 23, 1928, when I came into the world, the hottest day of the year according to my mother. Last week, on the 18th of July, I read in The Summit County News that there was to be an Open House at the Senior Center in honor of my 80th birthday. Even though I knew nothing about it and hadn’t been invited, I kind of figured I, like the public, would be more than welcome to attend…or more than likely, this would be a command performance on my part. Little did I know then what other surprises were in store for this old lady. When I first read the paper, which included my picture, which was not very good because it looks exactly like me, I said to Carma Burns, “They can’t use the Center on the 26th because Cindy McGehee has it reserved.” Then came the dawn, my friend Cindy is in cahoots with Rose and, from the look on her face, I knew she, too, was in on the plot and just as sneaky as they are. I got a call from Carma on the evening of July 24th and she asked, “Can you get out of having lunch at Senior’s tomorrow because I have company coming that I would like you and Rose to meet and we will have your birthday luncheon with them?” She said some other stuff too and I readily agreed and Rose would pick me up at 12:30 p.m. which she did. When we got to Carma’s, there were a number of cars in the yard, which didn’t surprise me and, since we were most likely having lunch on the patio, going in by the back door didn’t seem strange either but…being greeted with “SURPRISE” as I entered was a total surprise for there stood four of my five sisters and my two brothers and their spouses all grinning like the cat that had swallowed, the canary. Were there tears? Yes but they were happy tears. They all had to travel, from places, in Idaho, from Leeds, UT, and as far away as Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The only thing that would have surprised me more would have been if my oldest sister from Oregon could have been there. But if I haven’t learned anything else in my 80 years of life it is that we can’t have everything we want. We had a wonderful time and then the Open House on Saturday, the 26th, really topped my week off royally. Cindy McGehee and Deanna Pace took care of arranging the Center, decorating the tables, serving us and just everything and did it all so well for which we thank them. I was really surprised at the nice turn out from all you friends from the community plus my nieces and nephews who all had to travel along with one of my best friends and former coworker, Eliria Warburton. The hugs, hand shakes and good wishes really made my day except the day wasn’t over yet. Our family, all seven of us siblings, their spouses and nieces and nephews and families from Vacaville, CA, Rigby and Idaho Falls, ID and Layton and Riverton, along with Eliria, had a delicious hot meal at Carma’s and you know what, as of now, we have adopted her. We spent the evening at our house, reminiscing about old times. They all left for their homes on Sunday and have called to let us know they have all arrived home safely. To sum it all up, the planning for this-event started in January. I don’t know how my daughter, Rose, and our friends. Carma Burns and Cindy McGehee plus the family members, managed to keep the wool over my eyes so well. I cannot imagine any one of them being able to keep a secret that long. I will say they are pretty proud of themselves. I love it. I’m not proud exactly, but I think I must have been a pretty good spirit before I came to earth. Why else would I be so blessed to have this great family, good friends and the pleasure of living here in this beautiful valley in Utah? Thanks to all of you for making the day so special. I clue you now, there will never be another time like this has been. Are You Ready To Join The Millions You Have Already Quit? Quitting smoking can evoke many feelings: fear, resentment, relief, and an overpowering sense that quitting is too difficult. However, you really can do it! If you have considered quitting now is the time to join the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking course offered at Heber Valley Medical Center. The course is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., in the boardroom at the hospital. This eightweek session covers a different aspect of smoking cessation each week from determining if you are ready to quit, rewarding yourself for quitting, reducing stress, adding an exercise plan and finally staying smoke free. The course fee is $100, which includes an American Lung Association Freedom From Smoking Workbook and a relaxation CD. The workbook serves as a continual resource to help you stay smoke free. The initial class is free and will review the 8-week course, help you determine if you are ready to quit and will help you discover what type of smoker you are. This will enable you to better develop a plan for quitting. After the initial class, you can then decide if the time is right for you to quit. Millions of people have quit smoking and you can do it too! The classes are Aug. 5, 12, 18, 26, 28, and Sept. 2, 9 and 16.
