PEOPLE Dear Patrons of South Summit School District The 2008-09 school year is rapidly approaching and many of our teachers and staff are already in their rooms preparing curriculum and learning activities for their students. Il is gratifying to see dedicated teachers giving of their time, talents and money to see that the youth of our community receive a quality education. This school year brings with it some changes in the district. Most notably is the appointment of a new business administrator for the district. Mr. Kip Bigelow will be handling the finances of the district. He comes into this position with extensive knowledge of finance in the private sector as well as a seven years experience on the Board of Education. I welcome Kip to the district office and express confidence in his ability to continue the tradition of sound financial practices for which South Summit is known. Prior to his appointment as the business administrator Mr. Bigelow resigned as a board member. Maria Todd was appointed to fill the remainder of Mr. Bigelow's term of office. Other new faces in the district this year include Jenna Keyes, Debbie Wagstaff, Sue Winterton, Kathleen Lee, Kim Johnson and Kymm Hansen will all be working at the elementary this next year as teachers or reading coaches. Dusty Ercanbrack was hired as the new Ag teacher at the high school and Simon Montez as a custodian. Finally, Dan Eckert was hired as a Special Education teacher. He will split his work time between the middle and high school. In addition to personnel changes the middle school renovation is under way. The dressing rooms, shop and home economics rooms have been demolished and removed from the site. Walls are now going up to replace these three areas and add an additional 6 classrooms. Efforts are being made to make this transition as easy and safe as possible. The contractor has assured us that the band room will be accessible to band students from both the middle and high school. The gym should be ready for use the 2nd or 3rd week of the school year with the rest of the new part ready for occupancy by May of 2009. As many of you are aware the decision to move ahead with expansion of the middle school was not an easy one. There are both positive and negative aspects of this move and for some it is a very emotional decision. In deed, most school decisions are not easy because they involve that which is most precious to us, our children. I am convinced that we will never be as successful as we could be unless all of us are in agreement with what we want to happen in our schools. Students, parents, teachers and administrators all need to be on the same page when it comes to school programs and activities. This fall we will schedule a meeting where we will sit down together and talk about "What Counts" in our schools. From this meeting we will develop some improvement goals for our district and form committees to work on those goals. I am excited about the new school year and meeting with interested patrons in the "What Counts" meetings. I am convinced we can improve our schools as we clarify student expectations and work together in promoting programs and activities that help students succeed. In turn, our students have a greater sense of security and purpose as they see parents, teachers, and administrators working together as a team in their behalf. Thanks to all of you who give of your time and talent in behalf of the youth of our valley.
