Fri. 18th thru Thurs. 24fh - 6,9 Just Stuff by Jan I can't imagine the kind of faith, fortitude and forbearance our forefathers must have had. I'm afraid I wouldn't have cut it as a Pioneer. I?m too much of a wimp. Imagine trudging endlessly, day after day, mile after mile, pushing a handcart, or following a wagon, carrying everything you own in the back of a rickety old wagon or handcart, the hard ground for your bed, perhaps a tarp for your cover. Think of the dust, the dirt, the muck and mud, the grit and grime, and the stickers and bugs and no shower or hot bath, not even a pre-moistened quick wipe, and no bug spray or sun block. Imagine the constant threat of hostile Indians, trappers and other unsavory characters. There were horrible storms, dreadful heat, bitter cold, disease and hunger to contend with. People died — some starved, some froze, some were so sick that death was a blessing. But the Pioneers endured. With visions of a Promised Land and a resolve to worship as they pleased, they followed Brother Brigharn in search of Zion. I can't help but think, after a long, dusty, trying trip, that the first impression of the Salt Lake Valley was somewhat disappointing. Let's face it, at that time the valley consisted mostly of a sage brush flat. Period. There were probably a few trees snuggled up by a few meandering streams, maybe a few patches of grass, but I can't think it was the oasis about which many had been dreaming. I'm afraid when Brother Brigharn said "This is the place!" my faith would have waned and I would have caught the first flight out. I probably would have sat right down in my skirt and dusty pantaloons and bawled. But to the Pioneers, after being persecuted for their beliefs, after being run out of towns, after being threatened and tormented, that sage brush flat looked pretty good. And, while there might be a few things about Utah that I would like to change, all in all it is a pretty, great state, and I'm glad the Pioneers had the strength, stamina and get up and go to come here and stay! Happy Pioneer Day.
