School News PAGE B2 JUNE 13, 2008 Summit County News North Summit Girls Attend 2008 Girls State Five North Summit High School students attended the 2008 Girls State session held on the campus of Southern Utah University June 2-7. Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, and was structured to familiarize young women with their duties as United States citizens and encourages their participation in the democratic process. Girls from all over the state attend and many lasting friendships are formed during the session. The girls from North Summit who attended are: Janessa Williams, daughter of Jeff and Lori Williams, Shalese Peterson, daughter of Blake and Shauna Peterson, Stephanie Thiriot, daughter of Bart and Wendy Thiriot, Britney Brown, daughter of David and Jennifer Brown, and Kelsi Kitchen, daughter of Mel and Jill Brown. All of the girls who attended have just completed their Junior year at North Summit, are outstanding leaders, and are members of the National Honor Society. Janessa Williams is an outstanding member of the girls volley ball and basketball teams. She served as the Prom Committee co-chairman and has been elected as secretary of the North Summit Student Body Council. Janessa liked meeting the girls at Girls State and learned a lot about the country. She com- mented, “I have gained much respect for our country.” She was elected to the office of City Recorder at Girls State. Shalese Peterson has participated in dance and music at North Summit. She will be Drill Mistress for the drill team. She will also be serving as the LDS Seminary President. She was elected as a City Council member of her city at Girls State, and loved meeting the other girls and learning about our country. “Our patriotism grew so much,” commented Shalese. Stephanie Thiriot is an accomplished student of music, speech and drama and communications, and has been elected as Publicity Manager for the North Summit Student Council. She felt that it was awesome to meet so many other girls that shared interests with her, and commented, “One of the best experiences was learning about the care and honor of our flag from older veterans of past wars.” Britney Brown is a valued member of the girls volley ball and basketball teams. She was elected to the office of State Senator at Girls State, and said that she liked being involved and being a part of Girls State. Kelsi Kitchen has served as Editor of the War Whoop, and has been elected as the Vice President of the North Summit Student Body Council. She was 2008 Drill Team Chosen For NSHS This year’s 2008-09 North Summit Drill Team members are: Breanna Staples, Shalese Peterson, Kylie Batt, Taylor Horton, Kylie Snedden, Sierra Whitten, Carrie Chappell, Kaylie McQueen, Taylor Lewis, Jaci Judd, Tanna Tholen, Ashlee Gunn and Sadie Hennefer. elected as the Justice County Clerk at Girls State. She commented, “My favorite part about Girls State was the opportunity it gave me to make new friends and become more patriotic.” Free Community Diabetes Education Class Location: Wasatch County Senior Center June 25th 6-8:00 pm **Attendees will receive a new glucose meter and a diabetes education book.
