Last Thursday Kraig and I attended the final awards assembly. Kids from the younger grades sat “Indian-style” on the floor, poking and prodding each other, giggling and squirming in anticipation of that final bell that would release them for the summer. The sixth graders sat on the stage risers, sitting with a little more decorum than the “little kids” on the floor, but still poking and prodding each other and giggling in anticipation, not only of that final bell, but also with the knowledge that this was it. After the assembly, sixth grade would be over and they would officially done with elementary school. We listened as the names of the students receiving different honors and awards were read and we clapped as they stood. We cheered when Ty’s name was read as one of those who had achieved the “Presidential” level for Academic Fitness. Oakridge has been an excellent school. Tyler has had some fantastic teachers and has had some great experiences and he takes with him many great memories of his time at Oakridge. We were lucky to have both Devin and Tyler attend it for their elementary years, and they both enjoyed it (well, as much as any young boy can enjoy school). At the close of the assembly, as the sixth grade class of 2008 stood and sang “Love Can Build a Bridge,” and one of the teachers signed the words, a chill ran through me. I realized that Oakridge had provided Tyler with not only rudimentary academic skills, but had, over the years, instilled in him the importance of doing one’s best and having a positive attitude and it had exposed him to different cultures and the importance of diversity. I’ll be honest, when Devin moved from sixth grade to seventh I didn’t give Oakridge much thought. After all, Tyler was moving from third grade into fourth. But as the audience joined with the students to sing the school song, I realized that with Tyler leaving sixth grade, this would be the last time I would grace the halls of Oakridge Elementary as the parent of one of its students. There would be no more donuts for the class on his birthday, no more sitting on not-quite-full-sized chairs at parent conferences, no more plaster hand prints or painted pots for Mother’s Day, no more field trips and making sure all the kids were on the bus. Those days are gone and my baby is growing up, and I realized Tyler is not the only one who will carry with him fond memories of Oakridge Elementary, and a tear ran down my cheek. A special thanks to Mrs.. Newell, the principal, to Jackie and Theresa in the office, and to the wonderful teachers at Oakridge. I will miss you!
