Posted: May 7, 2008-Coalville City Hall, US Post Office, Summit County Court House Published May 9, 16, 23, 2008 -Summit County News Senior Class of 2008 Presents Their Program at Commencement! May 30, weather perfect, and students so ready to graduate, line up to experience their 2008 South Summit High School Commencement Program. Walking onto the football field, some with sunglasses as they would be sitting looking directly into the sun, they marched to their seats - some with determination, some with skipping energy, some with smiles of accomplishment, and others with the solemn look of memories now in the past! The program began with the National Anthem, and Inspiration opening by Jordan Wilde. Welcomed by Candace Weller, the class was presented to family and friends with introduction of speakers as planned. Emily Flinders talked on the Theme of Graduation - stating that students had “no idea (that) they had it in them” and they could or should “…pick what they wanted to become, and do what you have to do to achieve this goal.” The Senior Drumline then presented their rendition of rhythm and talent. They were applauded for their performance, and their experience and choice of their number they played was well received. A Class review in poetry taking the audience with them from kindergarten through their senior year was enlightening and brought laughter and applause from the students and audience. When they started school, it was Utah’s 100th Birthday - they covered everything from chocolate milk to sleepovers, Pokémon® cards, lockers that really locked in the fifth grade, dances (with the lights on), taller girls, ponytails, yearbook signings to creating the new SS Drumline. Homecoming, first ever newspaper for SSHS, Sterling Scholars, to graduation! A musical rendition of “I Will Remember You” was sung by Katie Wadsworth, followed by a fun address by Cody Lundgreen on how the class of 2008 will “Dominate” with “Diversity” and be able to all reach their “Destinations.” Candace Weller then presented her remarks, announcing the gift of $150 scholarship from the Class of 2008 to a graduate of SSHS for the next three classes for next year. Life is Rodeo Team Ends Season With Rodeo in Oakley STUDENT WRITER: BAILEE SIZEMORE The South Summit Rodeo Team ended the regular season with their home Rodeo in Oakley. The weather did not cooperate much and the outdoor arena floor resembled mud soup, but the cowboys and cowgirls came to compete and had a successful finish to a great season. At the Queen Contest Bailee Sizemore finished fourth, and Lachelle Lewis finished fifth. KC Fryer had a great time in the mud and placed second in Steer Wrestling. Team Roping saw Dillon Hoffman and Rhett Anderson place third and Brady Nicholes and Jordan Page finished sixth. Lane Thompson ended up ninth in the Boys Cutting and Sarah Slusher finished fourth in the Girls Cutting. McKenna Woolstenhulme placed fifth in poles and Shaneal Fryer qualified for the state finals in poles. Bailee Woolstenhulme finished seventh in Goat tying and Riata Mitchell finished 10th. The Team would like to thank all our parent and the volunteers who made our Rodeo a success. We could not make it without their support. about trust…happiness…compassion. They have been a “class that chose to touch lives of someone else!” Gary Twitchell, Principal of SSHS, introduced the class as “…truly and class with class and gave a gentle reminder that they …are cooperative - and valuable; curious and creative; enthusiastic and producers; diligent and will have success. The Class of 2008 was presented by Superintendent Barry Walker, but not until he introduced the retirees from the District - Dave Alplanalp, Sandy Hayes, Judy Staples, Mary Vaughan; with Special Acknowledgment to Zane Woolstenhulme. Guest at the Commencement was Mark Bezzant, Vice President UVSC. School Board President Marchant and Board members then presented the graduates with their diplomas and changed their tassels. Congratulations to each and every graduate and best of luck in your future plans! |
