Show Senior & HEALTH News JUNE 6, 2008 PAGE A7 Summit County News Summit County Health Dept. North Summit Summit County Schools Continue To Shape Kids One Mile at a Time Senior Citizens by Louise Wallace Three Summit County schools Jeremy Ranch, Trailside and South Summit elementary lead the pack in over 300 Utah elementary schools by continuing their commitment to creating a healthier generation. Not only did these schools complete a three year program in one year but have continued for another four years and there is no sign of stopping said Geri Essen of the Summit County Health de- partment. “They have not only made their school(s) a healthier place, but their teachers and parents are also adopting healthier behaviors as a result.” What defines these schools as a Gold Medal School is their policies. While each school is unique in the way it implements the program, policies include allowing students at least 90 minutes of physical activity per week, encouraging recess before lunch and substituting praise or small prizes in place of food as rewards. One in four Utah kids are overweight or at risk of overweight. Gold Medal Schools are taking this epidemic seriously and are working to combat it through lasting lifestyle changes. Gold Medal Schools plans to move into all of Utah’s elementary schools and has entered the next level with middle schools. Like its counterpart in the elementary schools, GMS Power-Up will help schools make policy and environmental changes that support good nutrition, physical activity and staying tobacco-free. A unique feature to GMS PowerUp is the involvement of a student committee. For more information on the Gold Medal School or GMS Power-UP programs you may contact the Summit county Health Department at 615-3910. We do appreciate her and all the nice helpers from Henefer too. Sure glad they started coming and it is so nice to have the activity in the quilting section again. We do miss Helen Boyer and Helen Judd since they both have had to quit because of health problems. We held our board meeting Friday. Joe Jenkins will be in charge of June. He has a new and different greeting post already up in the entryway. It always gives me a lift to enter and be greeted by those colorful, handcrafted works of art that he makes and shares with us. We have about 20 of us going to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone Park this week so attendance at Senior’s on Wednesday will be a little lower than usual. Don’t worry though, Chuck Grower will be there to take over my duties and help Joe if he needs help. We will try real hard, if we aren’t too busy having fun to think Watches • Engraving • Repairs Diamonds • Custom Design 32 S. Main Street Heber City, UT 84032 435.654.5661 about you all though. Will tell you all about it next week. Rose Wallace will not be able to drive on Thursday so our June shopping trip will be after lunch at Seniors on Friday, June 6. We have checked with those who generally go and they all have enough medication to last until then so we don’t have a problem in that area. You know with the price of gas going up, up and up, we plan on getting everything we think we will need on that day. I suggest that you all do the same. Rose is a wonder when it comes to packing stuff away so we should have plenty of room for your purchases (not furniture and that kind of stuff) of reasonable size. We will honor Father’s on June 13, Flag day is the 14th, and we need to sign up for Foot Care which will be on Friday, June 20. That is about all the activities I can think of that have been finalized for June. I just heard the news that Kay Crittenden and Dee Vernon have been and maybe still are in hospitals but I don’t have any details. We certainly hope they get well fast and we send greetings to all our home bound friends. Since we don’t have a lot to report, I will use the space to re- port on what my favorite author, Elise MaClay has to say. “Don’t let me lose my sense of humor. It seems to me I used to laugh more. Was the world funnier in those days? Of course not. It was the same mixture of darkness and light, sadness and silliness, doom and delight, then as now, and I used to get a lot of laughs out of it. Things haven’t changed as much as I have. In fact, now that I stop to think about it, a lot of the things that annoy me nowadays are the same things that used to tickle my funnybone. Do you heal funnybones, God? Of course you do, and the idea makes me smile. Well, now I’m home from the hospital. I can eat and drink and even smoke if I want to. They took out half my insides, and my kids, my friends, and the oldsters from Senior Citizen’s were positive I was going to croak. And You and I know, God, so was I. Evidently You have other plans for me, I can’t imagine what they can be, but I figure if and when You want me to know, I’ll find out.” You all take care, get well, stay well and I hope to see you again, next week.
