Show S.S. School News PAGE B2 Wildcat Softball Wraps Up The Wildcat softball season ended Friday, May 9, with a second round state play-off loss of 6-4 to the ALA Eagles in Spanish Fork. The Wildcats were in every game of the state tournament from their first round games May 3, against Beaver High School that ended 10-8 BHS’s favor, and the next round game with Duchesne High School that finished with the Wildcats on top 8-3, to their last game May 9, 2008, and third season meeting with ALA. This season has been a great success for the girls. The varsity team this year consisted of nine young players. Junior Ashley Clegg dominated the mound and started at pitch. Junior Jenna DeGering was behind home plate catching Clegg’s heat. First year junior player Amberlee Page was a towering figure on first. Sophomores Megan Peterson at second, Lexie Reidhead at shortstop, and McKenzie Woolstenhulme at third all played a second year for Coach Bowen and defensively kept the Sophomore infield strong. Haulsey Larsen spent a good deal of her second season in left field catching fly balls. Junior Chellsea Winterton played centerfield after recovering from an early preseason accident. Amy King, the only senior Wildcat, filled in at center for Winterton while she was injured. Junior Kiersten Parker defensively han- Park City School News P.C. Miners Win Judge - A Great Accomplishment! The Park City Miners have worked hard to improve their hitting, pitching, and have reaped the rewards of their practicing they won over Judge for the first time in four years. Coach Scott Chester has worked hard with the girls, and has developed a program and instructed them beginning with the basics. They have now won two games, but they were in Region 10 play, and the games were back to back. Coach Chester is happy to see the results that are coming along with the girls. Good luck girls with the upcoming games. They beat Judge now on to the rest of the games! Park City High 3A Boys Soccer State Champions! One more kick - and it was a win for the Miners - as Tyler Thomas made his play on a double overtime and it was a score! The Coach, Caro Caro, was as thrilled as the boys when the final score gave them the victory. This was his first State Championship, and the third for the team in the last five years. They played against Morgan at the Timpview High School on May 10. The young men were so excited, and Caro was so sure Thomas was ready for the last kick, that the combination gave them the chance to convert a penalty kick to a 1-0 victory. Congratulations, Miners! You’ve played out a good season! MAY 16, 2008 Summit County News dled right field, with sophomore Kendell Wilde doing the offensive batting for Parker when called upon. The Wildcat team looked at this season with bright optimism. Most of the girls started on the varsity squad last season as 9th and 10th graders playing against veteran ballplayers. They won no league games, but each player learned much and gained valuable experience that they called upon this season. With this year’s squad making the state playoffs, the girls felt that great strides had been made in bringing the program up to the standard in which they could take great pride. Varsity pitcher Ashley Clegg felt the team improved a lot, played well together as a group, minimized errors over the season, and was defensively strong. She says they plan to keep playing, and she will work on her throwing repertoire so look for some added new pitches. First year player Amberlee “Burly” Page initially tried out for the team when her friends encouraged her to come out and have some fun. At a season opening game with Morgan, a Trojan on a full run to first mowed down Burly. The runner was called out for not running in the runner’s path and interfering with a player trying to make a defensive play. Those who saw the accident are not sure that call made Burly feel any better, because on the next play a line shot was hit directly to the pitcher, which Clegg caught and then she turned and fired the ball to first to go around the horn. Burly didn’t know about this standard practice and caught the ball with her face. She had to leave the game momentarily due to a bad cut across her nose. Page got cleaned up and came back in the game gaining a lot of respect from her teammates. She plans to continue playing. She ended the regulation season by driving a ball deep over the left field wall for her first out of the park homerun. Coach Bowen when asked about his season said he felt great about the girls and his coaching staff and their efforts. He was impressed with their work ethic and their desire to get better. As a long time ballplayer, he knows how challenging it is for young players to overcome all the obstacles presented them when making the jump to fast pitch softball. Coach Bowen was excited with their progress and expressed his enthusiasm at the upcoming years. The Wildcats easily surpassed a preseason prediction from school administration. Great job girls and coaching staff! For those of us who have followed you this season, we look forward with anticipation to the first pitch next season. South Summit’s Rookie Baseball Season South Summit Baseball Team 2008: 4 - Conor Peterson 12; 8 - Trevor Lewis 10; 5 - Forrest Lucas 10; 12 - Ryan Weller 9; 23 - Hayden Peterson 12; 9 – Niko Klus 10; 1 - Trent Peterson 9; 20 Connor Prescott 9; 11 - Kendall Prescott 11; 3 - Forrest Sutherland 9; 27 - Levi Thompson 9; 41 – Zac Hendricksen 11; 21 - Britton Coil 10; 25 - Denver Hansen 10; 7 - Jacob Critchlow 10; 22 Karsen Crittenden 9; 32 - Lance Jensen 10; 10 - Tate Weller 9; Coaches: 6 - Stephen Sutherland; 13 – Troy Coil; 36 – Joe Santos. The return of baseball to South Summit proved a great success this season. South Summit High School hasn’t had a baseball team for the past three years. The last year the school participated in region play their team went 1-17 on the season. The interest in the program at that time was at an all time low and the program was cancelled. Interest in forming a team intensified finally in May of 2007. Boys approached district administration and asked what they would need to do to reinstate baseball to the school. They were given some strict instructions that required petitions, finding coaches, summertime commitment to a league to get prepared, and some early morning voluntary clinics to name a few. Obviously the boys and coaches did what had to be done and baseball is back at South Summit. Senior cousins Conor and Hayden Peterson led the team this season. Both boys, along with numerous others, had sorely missed playing this sport in which they had grown up participating. They made a big push to bring back baseball to South Summit. Both boys have been actively involved in various sports and have formed lasting friendships with these other young players. They feel confident in handing over the reigns to these younger players. The varsity starting team had two seniors, one junior, five sophomores, and two freshmen, playing in the regular rotation. Mothers Know Best Tapestry Farewell Tour STUDENT WRITERS: KATIE WADSWORTH AND LARA WOOLSTENHULME On Wednesday, April 9, the South Summit Tapestry attended the Region Large Group Ensemble competition at ALA High School. They competed with three songs and were rated a superior, which qualified them for state competition. The judges were nearly speechless. All they really had to say was, “Wow!” On Friday, May 9, Tapestry attended State Competition at Timpview High School. Although the official results are unknown as of this article’s submission date, the feedback from the judges was all very positive. Tapestry held their annual Spring Show on May 13. The theme was, “We Love a Musical.” This show was the last performance for the departing seniors. The Tapestry members would like to thank Kena Rydalch (director), Shelly Sorensen (accompanist), and their parents for all the support during this outstanding year. Rodeo Results Announced BAILEE SIZEMORE Reporter This past weekend the cowgirls and cowboys from the South Summit Rodeo Team were in Spanish Fork for the South Utah County Rodeo and in Nephi for the Juab Rodeo. At Nephi Bailee Sizemore won the title of 2nd Attendant. Trevor Rydalch placed 10th in the Boys Cow Cutting. Harley Atkinson continued his domination of the Bareback Bronc Riding event and placed first. The boys timed events were good for the team as well. K.C. Fryer won the Steer Wrestling event with a fantastic time of 5.470. Dillon Hoffman won the Calf Roping Event with a smoking 10.25 time, both Dillon and K.C.’s times were fast enough they could have placed in P.R.C.A. competitions. The highlight of the weekend came for our club president Dillon Hoffman, he won the All Around Cowboy title at the Juab Rodeo. The Team is off to Morgan and Heber this weekend. Don’t Forget about the South Summit rodeo in Oakley on the 25th of May. We would like to see everyone come out and support our local athletes. Go Classifieds! It Pays! 336-5501 This team gelled together and ended the season 10-10, finishing 3rd in Region 14. South Summit surprised many with this statistic. The team played some great games especially the two battles with North Summit. They are young and look promising for the future seasons. In the state tournament South Summit was matched up with Enterprise the 3rd seed in Region 13. This was a team that they had played early in the season and had beaten 1-0. The state game ended in Enterprise’s favor with South Summit losing by the score of 4-3 ending their rookie season. Due to the coaches, players, and parental commitment, this team came together very well. Great Job Wildcats! MRS. PETERSON’S SENIOR ENGLISH CLASS Mother’s Day is said to have started as an ancient spring festival dedicated to mother goddesses, which evolved through time to a signed bill by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. What started as a brain day class assignment the Friday before Mother’s Day turned into an interesting discussion about advice given by those important women in our lives, our mothers. This senior English class consists of around 25 soon-tograduate boys and girls from the Kamas Valley. Mrs. Peterson asked them to come up with the ten best pieces of advice that their mom’s had ever given them. Each student was then to ask to select that one piece of advice that they would pass on to their future children. Not surprising several students had the same advice in one form or another. The results of the selections are included: Pay attention while driving! Click it or ticket. Remember who you are and what you stand for! Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do. Always have fun. Be better than that! Pick up a book. Do a good turn daily. The Golden Rule. Be safe, be careful, and have fun. Don’t talk to strangers. Don’t eat yellow snow. Be yourself. No one does it better. If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything. Do your best. Be nice. It seems the mothers of Kamas Valley might be surprised to find that their children were listening and at one point thought what they heard was wise and of use. THANKS MOMS EVERYWHERE! Keep talking. On occasions, what you say might sink in.
