Show N.S. School News MAY 9, 2008 Track Region Champs - North Summit Lady Braves; 2nd Place Winners - North Summit Braves As clouds billowed overhead, Teams from region 14 gathered at South Summit’s track to face off in the region track meet. The weather didn’t cooperate as the heavens opened just after the 100 m preliminaries. Teams from Juab, North Summit, Roland Hall, American Leadership Academy, Layton Christian, and the host South Summit squared off to see who could jump the highest, run the fastest, or throw the furthest. The athletes were cold and wet and there were many great performances. In the end, Juab boys won the team trophy and North Summit girls came away as region champs. Many athletes qualified for the state competition to be held at BYU on May 16 and 17. Region Champions include: Girls Boys: Chelsey Mortenson in the 100 hurdles; Dallan Donaldson 100 m dash, 200 m dash, and Long Jump. Hayley Richins in the 300 hurdles; Nathan Fowles 3200, 1600 m runs; Holly Bosworth in the 400 m dash; Whit Jones Shot put; Carissa Mathews in the 800; Jenolyn Thirior in the 1600; Amy Donaldson in the discus, girls 4x 100 relay, girls 1600 medley relay, girls 4x400 relay One Person CAN Make a Difference! The fourth grade Student Safety Council was recognized on Monday, May 5, for their volunteer service in helping keep our Elementary School safe. Throughout the year they have assisted in areas such as; playground safety, clean school, bullying, and visitor check-in. The children shared their experiences with the audience and were then awarded a certificate and a free ice cream cone, donated by the Huddle. They have done a fantastic job and we thank them for all of their hard work! Softball Stats and Final Roundup The Winners Are… The North Summit Softball team had a very successful year. They ended their season with 17 wins and 7 losses. They also ended up in a 3 way tie for first place in Region 14. They won a coin flip and ended up going into On Monday, May 12, the FFA held their annual awards banquet to give out awards to fellow FFA members, to honor the former officer team, and to install the new selected team. The evening began by recognizing the sponsors for the past year of FFA. We would like to thank them for all of their donations to our program. Some of the very first awards given were the outstanding membership award. To receive this you had to be involved in the FFA and participate frequently in the many fun and exciting activities. Receiving this award was Dalton Ross from the Freshman class, Shyanne Ovard representing PAGE B1 Summit County News Sophomores, Cody Sargent for the Juniors, Kristin Jones as a mighty senior, and Ashlee Ross as overall outstanding member. Nice job everyone. Now moving on to the Star Greenhand awards: A member that carries the Greenhand degree and also excels in their SAE or in other words Supervised Agriculture Experience may be eligible to receive this award. The 2nd runner up was Cassidy Stephens, the 1st runner up went to Dalton Ross, and our big winner for the night was Marty Wright. Congratulations for all your outstanding work. The biggest award presented that night was The Summit County Rodeo Queen Contest will be held June 7, 2008 at the Summit County Fairgrounds in Coalville. Girls should be between the age of 15 and 24. Age is determined as of the first day of January 2008. Entry deadline is May 21, 2008. Girls interested in competing should contact Jaimee Robinson at 336-0525 or the Summit County Fair Office at 336-3221 or 783-4351 ext. 3221. The Eagle Leadership Award. This award shows great leadership skills, and are always working harder than the rest. Wade Donaldson and Shyanne Ovard were the recipients this year. “You are an inspiration to all of us like the majestic eagle”, says Kallie Pace while handing out this award to these two outstanding members. After an amazing and delicious dinner prepared by Mark Marsh and Steve Carlson, The past officers gave their retiring remarks and the new officers were to be installed. The new officers elected were, President: Travis Banks, Vice President: Kashlie Roath, Secretary: Shyanne Ovard, Sentinel: Marty Wright, Treasurer: Wade Donaldson, and last but not least as Reporter: Makay Stephens. The night was fantastic and it turned out as a total hit. We would like to thank all of our sponsors once again they played a major role in our FFA chapter. the state tournament as the #1 seeded team from Region 14. The state tournament did not go as planned. They lost their first game to Grand County 4-2, then ended their season losing to South Sevier 9-4. Regardless of the state tournament, the team had a very successful season. One of the highlights of the season would be their big win over Juab to begin the season. The played really well and won the game 5-2. Juab would eventually end their season as the State Runner Up. The second best team to San Juan. The girls participated in the Swing-For-Life Tournament and Hit-A-Thon. This event raises money for breast cancer research. The team went undefeated in the tournament and then raised the most money out of any school in the state. The girls raised over $5,000, with Sydney Gibbs collecting over $1,000 on her own, which was the highest for any individual girl in the event. A couple of stats: Kelli Stuart, pitcher, had a win-loss record of 15-5. She struck out 136 batters and threw 2 (1 hitters). Rachel Rehfield ended up hitting .493, the best on the team. Jenessa Williams led the team with 8 doubles. Britney Vernon led the team with 4 triples, while Rachel Rehfield had 3 home runs. We say good bye to 5 Seniors: Britney Vernon, Lacey Hatch, Kelli Stuart, Jaci Richins and Ashlin Olsen. We would like to thank all of the parents and those who watched our games for their support and help in building the softball program.
