Thirty-one years ago, Sandy Sutherland Hayes began her teaching career at Marsac Elementary in Park City Utah as a teacher/teacher aide. She loved the job so much she went back to U of U for elementary endorsement. She applied at South Summit Elementary and was hired to teach second grade. Her teaching career has included teaching second grade for 28 years and teaching English Language Learners for two years. Mrs. Hayes will be dearly missed by South Summit staff, students and parents. She has been a very dedicated and hard working employee. Her problem solving skills will really be missed. Mrs. Hayes has a gift for looking at a situation and coming up with numerous possibilities that will make a situation more positive. Mrs. Hayes has received nu- merous awards during her career. This year she received the 2007 “Excellence in Teaching Award sponsored by the Utah Education Association. She received this award because of her commitment to helping English Language Learners (ELL) and their families. Because of her dedication and efforts, ELL end of year test scores have risen significantly, ELL families are kept better informed of school events and critical information is translated. Mrs. Hayes has many plans for retirement. She loves working with students and plans to be a part time substitute teacher, a volunteer in the after school program, give her home a real spring cleaning, do family history, and spend more time with her grandchildren Colby, Kenda, Kiya, and Ravyn. While eating a Dove chocolate and reading the message on the inside she confirmed something she already knew but has had no time to participate in. “It is O.K. to do nothing.” Sometimes she plans to do nothing. The public is invited to an Open House to celebrate her very successful teaching career on Tuesday, May 28, at 3:10, in the elementary media center. We thank Mrs. Hayes for everything she has done to contribute to the lives of so many people.
