North Summit Boost ‘Till 8 Campaign Aims To Protect Kids Senior Citizens This year it is estimated that 19 Utah children under 8 years of age will die in a motor vehicle crash. This is now a largely preventable tragedy thanks to a new law that will require children to be properly restrained until age 8. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety’s 2005 Utah Crash Summary, safety restraint usage among children involved in crashes decreases as children grow older. The report shows that 88.1% of children ages 0-1 were in a child safety seat at the time of a crash, com- pared to 73.9% of 2-4 year olds, and only 18.8% of 5-8 year olds. “We still have a lot of room for improvement in our efforts to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of using appropriate car seats and booster seats,” said Geri Essen Safe Kids coordinator for Summit County. “With this new law in place, families have a safe guideline to help protect their children from unnecessary injury or even death.” In support of the new booster seat law special “Booster Seat clinics” will be held May 13 at the Coalville Health Department by Louise Wallace and May 14 at the Kamas Health Department from 3 p.m.-5:30 p.m. “Booster seats have been proven to be 60% safer than seat belts alone, and can save children’s lives and minimize their injuries in car crashes,” said Essen. Utah now joins the roster of 43 states with a booster seat law. For more information on booster seats or other child safety seats please call your local Summit County Health Department to speak with a certified child safety seat technician. Go Classifieds! It Pays! 336-5501 Just hearing those who went on the April County Activity to the Historic Rainbow Gardens telling about the good time they had made me sorry that I hadn’t attended. Maybe next time. The May activity has been cancelled but at the rate the time is flying, it won’t be long until June 2 when we leave for Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. Now all we have to do is pay the balance due by May 12 and pack your bags. The musical department took a vacation this week so we didn’t have music on Wednesday but we made up for it with a nice program on Friday. Bet you didn’t know how many songs have the word “ROSES” in them. It was obvious that LaVaun Vernon, Louise Simister, Margie Judd, Helen Thiriot and Leon Simister had put a lot of effort and time in preparing the program we had. They even provided nice prizes for those who counted the most times they sang the word roses and for those who could name the tunes. We thank them so very much for the entertainment. We held our board meeting on Friday. Sorry that Joe Jenkins and Doris Hardin couldn’t be South Summit School District is accepting applications for South Summit High School Assistant Drill Team Coach Two hours per week June - July Six hours per week August - February Applications may be picked up at: South Summit School District 375 East 300 South Kamas, Utah 84036 Or on line at http://www.ssummit.k12.ut.us For further information contact: Principal Gary Twitchell, 783-4313 Applications will be accepted at the District Office until the position is filled. Doris is feeling some better but still doesn’t have the energy she would like to have. We are hopeful that they will be with us at our next meeting on May 30. Harold thanked Lois Griffith for taking care of April and Lois thanks everyone who helped out. LuGene Jones is in charge of May and this will be the first time she has had this assignment but I am sure she has everything pretty well planned for the month. Mother’s Day is on May 11 so we will have a special dinner plus a nice program on Wednesday, May 7. Our shopping trip will be on May 8 and we invite you to take advantage of this service. The bus will take 14 passengers and we would like to have a full load. Our pot-luck dinner will be on Thursday, May 15, at 1:30 p.m. This will not only be pot-luck but it is George W. Perkins, Jr.s 83rd birthday and we have the privilege of celebrating it with hint. Plan on coming and helping us make this day one to remember. The karaoke program will be on the 16th. Kathy Wilds will take blood tests on the 28th. Band practice on the 14th, 21st and 28th, and on those three dates, the ladies will be quilting. Incidentally, they finished five, almost six quilts, in April so far. Louise Judd is doing the binding and they will go to aid the Humanitarian program. Those nifty stitchers besides Louise are: Arvilla Fawcett, LuGene Jones, Joye Ovard and Althea Richins. They are great and thank Chuck Grower for the new quilt frames. The birthdays for three lucky people who are over the age of 85 all fell on Wednesday this month, so we got to sing Happy Birthday three times. First, it was June Wilde’s on the 16th; Marjorie Smith’s on the 23rd, and Kelly Wilde’s an the 30th. We will have two in May: Kathleen Blonquist’s on May 3, and Rhea Iverson’s on May 8. We wish them the best always. It isn’t only the older people that are being called back to our homes in heaven. It’s also the younger ones and even babies. The sad accident that claimed the life of Andy Brierley last week will change many lives. He leaves his young wife, Sherry, and a nearly one year old son, his parents and siblings as well as many friends and co-workers. We send our deepest sympathy to all of them. One never knows when his or her time on earth will end and we don’t all get to see our golden years. I’m realizing that aging is not for sissies. It takes a bit of doing some days even to get up and get going. I’m fairly good on trips for at least an hour or so, that’s as long as I have my aspirins, my inhaler and my Beano with me and I am among the first ones off the bus to find the nearest restroom. That’s wherever and however I go. I know why the days go by so quickly: my land it seems to take forever just to get the childproof cap off my prescription. We are told to take exercise every day and that walking will do that. I think I take a least 1,000 steps just looking for something that I am sure I put in a secure place. There is one good thing I’ve found about aging, though, I’m not afraid to reveal what goes on behind closed doors… absolutely nothing! But it’s nice to be alive. See you next week.
