Show Happenings PAGE A6 MAY 2, 2008 Summit County News Just Stuff 90th Birthday Celebration by Jan I’m pleased to say that Boy Scout troop 410’s 47th annual Buffalo Barbecue was a huge success. After months of planning and organizing, weeks of selling tickets, and hours and hours of hard work from parents and other volunteers, Saturday night the scouts served well over 1200 “dine in” or “take out” buffalo dinners. I’m often quick to give credit to the success of the barbecue to the parents and volunteers who pitch in to make it a success – the ladies who rolled over 800 sets of knives and forks in napkins for the table settings, the people who scrubbed the 1500 potatoes and wrapped them in foil for baking, the men who set up the tables, unloaded the slicers, and did the heavy lifting. They’re the people I see. I’m quick to credit the guys manning the roasters, slicing the meat and brewing the root beer, the ladies filling the plates, cutting the pies, fixing the salads, and making sure each plate has sour cream, salad dressing and butter. I’m a parent, an adult volunteer. I know how hard everyone works. And while the parents and volunteers make it happen, if it weren’t for the scouts, it wouldn’t happen at all. They’re the ones who bring in the bucks going door to door, sitting in front of grocery stores, calling friends and neighbors, selling tickets and getting the donations. And they’re the ones who have to serve the meals. Working in teams assigned to several tables, they set out the placemats and the silverware; they greet the patrons, fetch the salads, serve the dinner, and bring the pie. They clear away the dirty dishes, clean the table and get things ready for the next diners. Saturday night I heard comments from the guests about how well organized things were; how smoothly things ran. Many said that the dinner was delicious; the root beer was great; the buffalo was “sooo good;” that the meat was tasty and tender. And I loved hearing it all. But what pleased me most were the numerous comments I heard about the boys. The service was great. The scouts were cheerful and friendly and they worked so well together. Many people commented about how impressed they were with the troop. I’m glad that the dinner was a success. I’m pleased that we raised as much money as we did for the troop. But what is the most rewarding is to see these young men working together and making it happen. They represent the troop, and scouting and what it’s all about. And they do an excellent job. I am very proud of the scouts of troop 410. Great job, guys!
