School News November 30, 2007 The Summit County Bee Page B3 Special Assembly Honors Football 2A State Champions Monday night the North Summit High School held a special assembly to honor the North Summit Football 2A State Champions for 2007. Not only did they have a perfect 12-0 historical record-breaking -season, but they came home with the trophy for State! The members of the team would like to especially thank the coaches and staff who stood behind them and were there for them – all the way! The student-body would like to thank the cheerleaders, parents, fans, and especially Tub Garfield for announcing the games on the TV C h a n n e l . The freshman and JV program is Hatch Announces Three Transportation Grants For Utah National Parks Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will award three grants to Arches and Zion National Parks, totaling more than $1 million, for critical Alternative Transportation in Parks and Public Lands (ATPPL) projects. “Our state’s natural beauty has long drawn Utahns and tourists alike to its many National Parks,” Hatch said. “By providing equal access and visitor accessibility to these areas while conserving their natural, historical, and cultural resources, Utah’s visitors and residents will be able to enjoy fully Utah’s wilderness. I congratulate the staff of Arches and Zion for winning these grants.” These grants will provide funding to plan, expand and construct muchneeded alternative transportation projects: $774,000 was awarded to the Bureau of Land Management Moab Field office, Arches National Park to construct a transit hub on the north end of Moab; $151,000 was awarded to Zion National Park to expand the visitor center shuttle-bus stop; and $150,000 was awarded to Zion National Park to fund a shuttle- service planning study. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) appropriations for the Alternative Transportation in Parks and Public Lands are authorized by Section 3021 of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act. The program’s goals are to promote and maintain natural, historical and cultural resources; cut back on congestion and pollution; improve tourism accessibility and experience; and ensure access to everyone including persons with disabilities. also to be thanked – it takes an entire team to mold champions. Coach Devan Smith made a few remarks and he and the staff were proud of the way that they developed together, learning what was expected of them by the end of the season, pulling together. The progress was tremendous this year. He said that junior and sophomore team members that stepped up and helped them gain the record of 4 and 3. The freshman and JV teams gave the senior team good practices – which are very important in learning how to work together. Coach Jerre Holmes – “expressed his feeling about having a formal picture taken of the team – that it is a classy thing to do – to honor the team – and even though it is great to have a team picture with a uniform on – this picture with a tie and dress shirt tells people a lot about the team. The amount of people it takes to coach a team is incredible. There are so many people to be thanked – Vice Principal and Athletic DirectorBrett Richins, High School Secretary – the Superintendent for his support – and his genuine support along with the School Board and faculty during the season. Also – those parents and fans that supported the team was outstanding. There is something unique about the fans that support the team when they do not have any children on the team anymore. A special thanks to the managers – they were always there. There are also those to thank who also helped with the physical needs and injuries of the team members. Channel 38 group and student group also put a lot of time to make the games exciting for those who could not make it to the games. “Team coaches and their families – they showed true commitment. Each of the players – to you young men – they had it in their hearts and heads that they wanted to be “State Champion!” “The summer and fall practices brought the team together – they never changed – they became a “Team”. They had molded their state of mine – a priceless piece of work. We as coaches sensed and felt that this team would accept nothing less than 1st! They believed that they were the best in the state! They also felt that their fallen teammate - “Never had a more satisfied feeling as a coach on that day from beginning to end – I want to especially thank this group for that day! It is also an honor to be chosen by their peers to be team captains… Caleb Adams – Drew Robinson – Chandler Woolstenhulme – Dallan Donaldson – great men who worked together to keep the team going! I (Coach Holmes) want to say…Thanks to each of you.” Certificates and letter pins were then handed out – and now it is time to go on to their next sport! Lady Braves Victory Over The Miners at NSHS The Lady Braves prevailed the entire game - taking the lead early, with shots from several angles and sides. The girls seemed to be able to draw fouls from the Miners, and several of their foul shots helped keep the score on top. They prevailed with a winning score of 55-35 for the Lady Braves. The Freshman Team lost 15-24; JV squad led the way and topped the Miners with a 38-13 victory. A special thank you to their coaches, Sheldon Smith, Gary Morrill, Nathan Greenwood and Manager Britney Vernon. Great job, girls! |
