Show Around the County November 9, 2007 The Summit County Bee Conservation Corner by Nathan Fikkert Page A5 Come See The Kamas Valley Lion’s Gun Club Solar Water Pumping Solar pumping may be the most practical system for your livestock watering needs. Technology advances in solar panels and water pumps make modern watering systems economical and low maintenance. The free energy from the sun pro- vides the fuel and the systems can be located practically anywhere. Individual needs require calculation for sizing, but a simple solar system is relatively low cost and easy to install. There are many panels to choose from. A new panel, produced by UNI SOLAR, is glass free, utilizing a thin film of amorphous silicon and can produce power even when partially shaded or damaged. The panels can produce even while lying on the ground. Pumps can be submersible or suction types. The simplest is a D.C. direct pump that can be wired from the solar module, through a Linear Current Booster (LCB), and directly to the pump. These require no batteries, but will have to have a water storage tank above the trough to supply water when the sun is not shining. Typically, a system to supply livestock watering for 20 cattle and horses per year, the solar system, including pump, will be less than $1,500. This does not count the installation of pipe, trough, or cistern. The vertical lift is 80 feet and the linear distance is 1/4 mile. Long sunny days will produce more than short or cloudy days. A typical summer day will pump up to 500 gallons. If more volume is needed, the design can be upgraded. The NRCS office in Coalville can give you more information and help you decide if a solar system will work for you. Contact (435) 3365853, Travis x105; Nathan x107; Jason x104; or Dave x106.
